Additional Information
We have an opening for a Measuring and Test Equipment (M&TE) Engineer to apply advanced technical knowledge in support of ongoing projects in the Superblock, a DOE Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility. You will be program owner for the Superblock M&TE as well as the LLNL Performed Calibrations (LPC) Plan for Critical M&TE. As the program SME, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of test and experimental data used in reports, research & development, specifications, acceptance testing, or in the development and fabrication of product. You will ensure the accuracy, calibration, and compliance of precision measurement tools used in manufacturing, R&D, or production. Key duties include managing equipment lifecycles, performing, or coordinating calibrations, analyzing data, and maintaining compliance with quality standards. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate. This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home up to one day per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization. You will Perform, coordinate, and maintain calibration and certification of electrical, mechanical, and dimensional M&TE, ensuring traceability to national standards such as NIST. Manage M&TE assets, records, and databases, including calibration intervals, certificates, equipment tracking, scheduling, procurement, maintenance, and decommissioning. Provide technical guidance on measurement tool selection, calibration, and categorization based on design requirements, Test Uncertainty Ratio (TUR), and intended application. Evaluate out-of-tolerance, nonconforming conditions and calibration recalls, analyze measurement data, assess quality impacts, and support root-cause and corrective action investigations. Develop, validate, and continuously improve calibration procedures, specifications, and documentation, including calibration service providers, to ensure consistency, compliance, and process effectiveness. Test, calibrate, and certify instruments and tools used for electrical and physical measurements, ensuring nonconforming, damaged, or overdue equipment is removed from service, evaluated for impact, and dispositioned. Ensure compliance with project, quality, safety, and programmatic requirements through coordination with Quality Engineering and technical staff. Design and evaluate calibration systems, workflows, hardware, and software to support test, production, and program needs. Apply analytical and uncertainty methods and prepare clear technical reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders. Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level Provide technical leadership and direction in the development of M&TE processes, applying advanced level engineering knowledge, significant technical experience, and innovation to create solutions and resolve complex problems, while ensuring safety and compliance with DOE orders and specifications Serve as the focal point for calibration-related activities across facility operations, laboratories, quality, and engineering Drive continuous-improvement projects that reduce cycle time, improve M&TE availability, and increase test-system reliability Lead the development and implementation of key performance metrics for the M&TE program Evaluate and exert influence on the development, methods, resource needs, priorities, progress, and completion of programmatic and organizational goals, providing recommendations and advice to project leadership as necessary. Work with metrology SMEs to align LLNL Performed Calibration Plan implementation with institutional requirements and drive policy improvements Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Metrology, or related technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. Engineering aptitude as evidenced by past engineering, experimental, operational, or moderately complex troubleshooting or modification projects, including reviewing & performing engineering calculations, specifications, drawings, or analyses 2 + years of hands-on engineering experience with measurement or test equipment and instrumentation in aerospace, manufacturing, automotive, medical-device, or similar hardware environments, such as torque wrenches, wire crimpers, pressure stands, load cells, temperature/thermal systems, electrical test benches, CMMs, optical comparators, data-acquisition rigs, and functional test systems
