JOB SUMMARY This paragraph summarizes the general nature, level and purpose of the job. Under medical supervision the obstetrical (OB) technician facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures; ensuring that the operating room or Labor/Delivery/Recovery (LDR) is safe, the rooms are properly stocked with supplies, that equipment functions properly, and that the procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse (RN) the OB technician performs routine patient care duties such as collecting, recording and reporting patient data in a timely and accurate manner. The OB Technician provides for, and/or assists patient/family with Activities of Daily Living such as eating, dressing, bathing, using the toilet. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct. * After documented instruction and competency evaluation: sets-up and scrubs for cesarean sections, postpartum tubal ligations, cervical cerclage, dilatation and curretage, and emergency abdominal hysterectomies. * Practices aseptic technique according to established standards of care and infection control policies. * Assures the C-Section rooms are ready for emergency procedures. * Removes instruments from Labor and Delivery Room (LDR) and/or C-section room, rinses, counts and soaks instruments in appropriate containers. * Maintains a clean, safe and functional work environment. * Restocks operating room suites and LDRs with supplies as required. * Correctly checks and stocks epidural carts and anesthesia machines. * Assures replacement or repair of malfunctioning equipment and instruments. * Sets up and maintains oxygen therapy equipment. * Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies in utility rooms as assigned. * Performs and/or assists with Treatments and Procedures. * Performs routine patient care duties such as collecting, recording and reporting patient data in a timely and accurate manner. * Provides for, and/or assists patient/family with Activities of Daily Living such as eating, dressing, bathing, using the toilet. * Supports the development of unit/team goals and actively participates in unit staff meetings, in-services, and educational programs as required. * Follows House and Telephone Standards as established by the Medical Center. Preferred candidates who have completed an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services).
