The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is home to four departments and many programs and research centers that cross disciplines. We approach scientific problems from fresh angles using creative interdisciplinary approaches while drawing on our departmental strengths in the core sciences. MCS faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their research in a variety of fields, including polymer science, cosmology, mathematical finance, and neuroscience. The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) was established to provide a summer enrichment experience in the sciences and mathematics for hardworking Pennsylvania high school students and to encourage them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The program provides instruction in biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science, with emphasis on collaborative learning and team research. We are seeking a lab technician to work with the program director, chemistry faculty in the program, and the Chemistry Teaching Lab Team to ensure all materials for labs and team projects are prepared and safely cleaned up at the end of class. There will also be opportunities to work directly with the students in the program. Program Dates for PGSS 2026: Student Arrival & Opening Ceremony: Sunday, June 21, 2026 Scientific Symposium: Thursday July 23 and Friday July 24, 2026 Closing Ceremony: Friday July 24, 2026 Your core responsibilities will include: Coordinating with the program faculty and Chemistry Teaching Lab staff to ensure materials are pulled and available for team projects and lab. Preparing reagents and materials prior to the start of team project and lab sessions (lab and team projects are MTRF 2:30-5:30pm) Ensuring that all reagents and materials are stored safely at the end of a team project and lab session. Recording glassware breakage Be present during lab and team project sessions for additional help as needed In addition to these core responsibilities, you may be asked to assist with set up for the Opening Ceremony, Scientific Symposium, and/or the Closing Ceremony.
