About the role

Subnero is a deep-tech company specializing in underwater communication and positioning technology. We design and build mission-critical hardware and software solutions that operate in the ocean's most challenging environments, from shallow coastal waters to depths of 6,000 meters. We don't just build devices; we create integrated systems where the hardware, software framework, and the human operator form a cohesive, reliable solution. As we expand our reach from acoustic modems into other areas and systems, we are seeking a designer who shares our commitment to rigorous engineering, industrial design, and products that perform flawlessly under extreme pressure. 👉 A role with a path: You start as the owner of our mechanical and industrial design. As you learn our products, our customers, and our market, you grow into a Product Owner who shapes what we build and why, not just how it is made. The move is natural, because a product designer already lives where customers, suppliers, timelines, and tradeoffs meet. We will grow the scope with you as you earn it. As a Mechanical and Product Designer at Subnero, you will: Design our subsea products: Engineer systems and accessories like those in our current range, rated to 6 km of ocean depth, from concept through to qualified hardware. Design our topside products too: Create the desk based and deck units that work alongside the subsea hardware. Bring an industrial design eye: Incorporate a clean, modern, and purposeful industrial design lens to every project, ensuring our hardware is as visually thoughtful as it is technically proficient. Design for manufacture and excellence: Apply DFM and DFE thinking from the first sketch, not as an afterthought. Design the materials and sealing: Select materials and design the sealing and connector interfaces that survive seawater and pressure, and prove the housings to their depth rating with the right structural analysis. Engage vendors and manufacturers early: Work with suppliers from the start to shape materials and the manufacturing process around the design, and the design around what can be made well. Own the CAD and the documentation: Produce CAD models, STEP files, general arrangement drawings for parts and assemblies, and the final production and assembly instructions. Run configuration management: Manage models and variations across the range, keeping every revision clean and traceable. Own testing, inside and out: Take charge of internal and external testing, including pressure testing to qualify the depth rating. Own the product over the long term: Be its lasting owner, not just the person who drew the first version. Design for what is next: Develop for upcoming product lines, including diver devices. You will thrive in this role if you: Have 4-5 years of experience in mechanical design, with a portfolio of physical products you have taken to production. Have managed the design and manufacturing of multiple devices and variants at once, not just a single product. Bring DFM, DFE, and industrial design experience, ideally from consumer electronics or a similarly high quality product. Are fluent in CAD and confident producing STEP files, general arrangement drawings, and production ready documentation. Finite element analysis for structural and pressure design is a strong advantage. Have managed revisions and the full product design lifecycle, ideally with configuration management or PLM tools. Are comfortable engaging vendors and manufacturers early to steer materials and manufacturing choices. Have an eye for industrial design and care how a product looks and feels, not only how it performs. Have marine, subsea, or pressure rated product experience, which is a strong plus. Hold a degree in mechanical engineering with associated industrial or product design, or carry the equivalent in hard experience. Before applying, you might want to: Explore our products and solutions to see what you would be designing for. Picture the environment our hardware lives in, full ocean pressure, seawater corrosion, and divers who cannot afford a fiddly interface. Think about one object you would redesign for use underwater, and exactly why it fails today. This role could be a great fit if you are: A mechanical engineer with a designer's eye who is tired of being boxed into a single discipline. An industrial or product designer with real engineering experience and depth who wants the hardest design brief there is. Someone who wants to start by owning the hardware and grow into owning the product. Life at Subnero We are a small, highly technical, and collaborative team building hardware that ships to customers on five continents. Our values show up in daily life: Rigor in the way we design, analyse, and test what we build. Curiosity in how we explore new forms, materials, and interactions. Responsibility in owning a product from the first sketch to qualified hardware. T
