About the role

Marathon Petroleum Company LP is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Electronic & Instrumentation (E&I) Technician to support operating facilities in the Pacific Northwest, and officed in Vancouver, Washington . This role is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and vapor control systems at light product and asphalt terminals. This role supports terminal operations by ensuring equipment reliability and operational efficiency, often working beyond the scope of standard terminal personnel capabilities. Technicians will work with a wide range of equipment including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), terminal control systems, network hardware, electronic presets, tank gauging systems, vapor control systems, pumps, motors, actuators, and more. The position requires strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, self-direction, and the ability to collaborate across teams and locations. While the primary focus of the role is electrical and instrumentation, it will also be responsible for troubleshooting and maintenance activities for mechanical equipment within the technician's abilities and qualifications. A company vehicle, tools, equipment, and uniforms are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Inspection & Diagnostics:
  • Perform preventive maintenance and performance tests on electrical and electronic components.
  • Diagnose malfunctions and recommend repairs or replacements based on reliability, cost, and safety.
  • Maintenance & Repair:
  • Disassemble, recondition, and replace parts for electrical and mechanical systems based on as-found conditions or symptoms.
  • Conduct board-level and component-level troubleshooting and repairs, including board-set replacement, configuration changes and cable fabrication where applicable.
  • Provide after-hours support for terminal operations, including emergency troubleshooting and system recovery.
  • Installation & Configuration:
  • Install electrical and mechanical components, including PLCs, control systems, and instrumentation. Complete startups including device configuration, functional testing and commissioning activities.
  • Set up process control PLCs, software, cabling, and network hardware.
  • Purchase or request stocks of spare parts, supplies and materials.
  • Preventive Maintenance:
  • Schedule and perform routine inspections and testing using manuals, drawings, and diagnostic tools.
  • Maintain equipment in optimal operating condition through proactive servicing.
  • System & Record Management:
  • Use PC-based maintenance management systems (e.g., Mobility) to update work orders, track equipment history, and report issues.
  • Collaboration & Support:
  • Work with engineers, project managers, suppliers, and contractors to support installations and resolve issues.
  • Provide training for adjacent groups and terminal personnel.
  • Assist other technicians and support cross-functional projects across geographical areas.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in electrical, instrumentation, or terminal operations preferred.
  • Technical training or degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Terminal operations, electrical, or PLC programming experience preferred.
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude is strongly preferred.
  • HAZMAT driving endorsement preferred but not required.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Windows-based PCs and mobile technology required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently in a safety-critical environment.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • A successful candidate will be required to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) with company funding.
  • TRAVEL REQUIREMENT:
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% and provide flexible support for shift-based operations.
