- PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Perform daily equipment checks to ensure proper functioning of equipment
- Monitor supplies as needed
- Explain screening procedure and next steps to parents
- Perform newborn hearing screening tests per stated protocol otoacoustic emissions, or OAE, tests on babies in the hospital well-baby nursery automated auditory brainstem response, or AABR, tests on newborns in neonatal intensive care units
- Ensure proper documentation of screening results in electronic medical record
- Convey results of hearing screenings to families
- Review "problem cases" encountered by screeners, referring to consulting audiologists when needed
- Ensure completion of follow up test for newborns that fail initial test
- Use data management software to track infants and ensure appropriate follow-up is obtained by families
- Produce monthly reports showing number of births, percentage of newborns that are screened, refer rates, reasons for refusal, and other data requested by hospital administration
- Provide in-services to screeners, birthing educators, physicians, nursing staff and any other hospital staff as needed and/or requested
- Revise printed educational materials as needed
