About the role
Performs all aspects and modalities of Respiratory Care to Health System patients per department guidelines. Responds to resuscitation situations and other respiratory emergencies when needed. Maintains and completes appropriate documentation in patients' charts and departmental records. Performs as charge therapist when necessary. Major Job Functions The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Administer continuous oxygen and continuous bland aerosol therapy per department guidelines Perform intermittent therapy and diagnostic procedures per department guidelines Access Patient medication from the Medication Security Area to implement Respiratory Care per hospital and departmental policies and procedures Initiate and maintains mechanical ventilation and completes appropriate documentation Provide airway management, ventilation, and closed chest compression as necessary during emergency resuscitation Perform intubations after receiving approval Assess patient condition and respond to respiratory care so recommendations can be made when necessary and establish protocols are followed Initiate and maintain monitoring equipment that are the responsibility of the Respiratory Care Department Perform as charge therapists in the absence of a supervisor Charges for all services provided inclusive of use of BCX system Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
- Education and Formal Training:
- Graduate of a COARC approved Respiratory Care Program required
- Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) required
- Licensed by the NCRCB required
- BCLS certified by the American Heart Association required
- Work Experience:
- Clinical experience preferred
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Understanding of medical terminology and current respiratory care modalities
- Ability to react calmly and maintain composure in stressful situations and when dealing with co-workers, patients, and hospital guests
- Knowledgeable of the psychosocial and physiological development and spiritual needs of infants, children, adolescents, and all adult age groups (per Erickson's Model) to provide appropriate care and intervention, either personally or through staff
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to communicate orally
- Manual dexterity to operate and assemble equipment
- Visual acuity
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time
- Ability to position and move patients
- Ability to push heavy equipment to patients' bedsides
- May involve skin, eye, and mucous membranes with blood or other potentially infectious materials
