About the role
The Police Officer, under general supervision, provides specialized professional law enforcement skills by giving service, information, and aid to the university community and campus facilities as circumstances require, preventing crime, suppressing disturbances, investigating criminal offenses, and arresting offenders. Interviews complainants and generates reports to be forwarded to CID or other departments as needed. Secures crime scenes, conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, apprehends suspects, makes arrests, and transports offenders. Be available to assist faculty, staff and students with general information, inquiries, or other needs. Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests, juvenile hearings, depositions, and similar proceedings. Serves arrest warrants, search warrants and other papers, as required. Keeps informed and aware of persons and places suspected of illegal activity and/or the potential for problems within an assigned area. Responsible for decisions as to the appropriate action necessary in accordance with rules, regulations, policies, federal, state, and local laws. Recognizes and reports safety hazards. Develop and maintain required skills and certificates. Attends continuing education courses/law enforcement training. Uses and properly cares for firearms and related police emergency equipment. Must wear and effectively utilize all department issued equipment, as well as, maintain provided uniform and equipment and present a professional appearance and image. Operate a motor vehicle safely while utilizing a police radio and other emergency equipment. Operate and qualify with the department issued firearms, utilizing both hands, as well as with each hand individually. Operate office equipment, camera systems and field equipment. Retain and retrieve information furnished in the form of bulletins, verbal reports, briefings, and training. Project a professional image, both on duty and off, as dictated by Texas A&M-Commerce Police Department policy and procedure.
