About the role

Reporting to the Technical Team Lead, you will actively ensure the smooth, efficient operation of teaching and research laboratories by providing high-quality technical support. Your key responsibilities will include: Setting up, maintaining, and operating engineering equipment, and ensuring safe practices across teaching and research environments. Acting as Technical Custodian of the teaching and research facilities, overseeing safety across related student activities. Testing, maintaining, and managing laboratory equipment on a day-to-day basis, and preparing teaching materials for undergraduate practical classes. Coordinating and providing support for laboratory sessions including planning, resourcing, set-up, and pack-down of experiments. Conducting laboratory inductions and training users on specialised equipment. Implementing, monitoring, and maintaining Work Health and Safety protocols, ensuring risk management documentation is current. Providing technical assistance to academic staff, undergraduate students, and HDR students across teaching and research laboratories. Maintaining liaison with suppliers and external contractors to maintain and improve laboratory equipment and environments. The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs across a diverse range of disciplines and is home to several world-class research centres and facilities. It is comprised of two research departments and four schools, each with a different scale and/or discipline-specific approach to administration, technical and infrastructure support for research and teaching. The Technical Operations team provide specialised technical support services to teaching and research activities of the faculty. The team covers a broad range of capabilities and expertise across laboratory, specialist facilities and field-based activities that are essential for the smooth functioning of teaching and research within the faculty. About You (Selection Criteria) You are a practical, safety-conscious professional with a background in mechatronics engineering and experience providing technical support in a laboratory or workshop environment. You bring a genuine commitment to workplace health and safety and communicate clearly with a proactive, flexible, and resilient approach. You manage your time and resources effectively, enabling you to plan, prioritise, action, and follow up tasks as required. A degree in Mechatronics Engineering or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education, and training. Demonstrated ability to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot electrical circuits, with foundational knowledge of PCB assembly and testing, as well as control and embedded systems. Sound knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems, robotics and automation equipment, and 3D printing, including their operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Experience providing technical support in teaching and/or research laboratories, including the development and delivery of inductions and training on equipment. Sound knowledge of, and experience in, applying safe work practices within laboratory environments with a capability in interpreting risk assessments, Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs). Proven ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, both verbally and written. Experience in programming language/s for various applications, and 8/16/32-bit microcontrollers e.g. ARM, AVR, STM32.
