About the role

A*STAR Skin Research Labs investigates all aspects of skin health and disease. We are looking to appoint a Research Director (RSE6) to support our Skin Disease research theme and to drive forward A*STAR's translational agenda in the Dermatology Therapeutics space. The successful candidate will support and maintain the Institute's national and international reputation for research excellence, including international recognition in inflammatory skin disease through originality in research, scholarship and contribution to the advancement of knowledge. The successful applicant will participate in the overall contribution of the Institute, where appropriate, as requested by the Institute's Executive Director. Key Duties and Responsibilities Translate fundamental insights of inflammatory skin disease pathomechanisms to develop novel therapeutic interventions; Identify nascent skin disease areas focussed on clinical need; Determine appropriate research methodologies for discovery research and translation; Apply appropriate research methodologies and analyses to formulate new concepts and ideas; Monitor progress on large research projects, communicating research progress to relevant bodies; Lead team of researchers - recruiting, selecting and managing the work of staff - and overall, directing the research programme; Protect intellectual property through the submission of technical disclosures and patents; Communicate research results via publication of data in internationally recognized journals and by invitations to speak at international meetings; Attract research funding via the submission of research grant applications; Mentor junior colleagues when submitting competitive research grants or journal submissions and guide the work and research of postgraduate students hosted within the laboratory; Actively participates in relevant committees and the life of the Institute; Undertakes other duties as appropriate, under direction of the Executive Director. Person Profile Essential knowledge, skills and experience required for the role Educated to higher degree/PhD level in subject relevant to skin biology. Carries out original and innovative research, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in inflammatory skin disease at an international level. Have an established track record of research publications. Engages in continuous professional development - keeps up-to-date with the latest thinking in inflammatory skin disease research by reading other academic material, attending conferences and active discussions with others in field. Is internationally recognized as a key opinion leader in inflammatory skin disease research. Provides advice/guidance/opinion as a leading national/international authority in inflammatory skin disease research Contributes to the setting of standards for the work of the Institute. Decision Making Decisions taken by the role-holder without reference to others. Determines own research topic and publications material. If applicable, the allocation of work to research grant employees. Expenditure of research grant money. Decisions taken by the role-holder in collaboration with others. As an active member of the Institute, participates in planning and determining priorities in both research and administration. On occasion, participate in the recruitment and appointment of staff in external institutions. On occasion, participate in collaborative research projects or publications, for example taking joint decisions about the direction of research. Participate in the recruitment and selection of research grant employees. Decisions taken by others following advice or input by the role-holder. Provides advice and guidance to staff and hosted postgraduate students regarding research. On occasion, provide editorial recommendations to external publishers. May review grant applications on behalf of funding bodies. May be involved in staff restructuring/s in the Institute and in the delegation of ongoing responsibilities to staff. Training May induct new members of staff in the Institute. Acts as mentor to new member of staff in the Institute. Participates in the Institute's appointments committee. Performs appraisals. Gives guidance, support and specific training to other members of staff within the Institute.
