Responsibilities

  • Lead defined mechanical design tasks or work packages across feasibility, optioneering, concept, outline and detailed design.
  • Prepare, check and coordinate mechanical deliverables including calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, P&IDs, layouts, design reports and procurement documentation.
  • Take ownership of assigned mechanical packages, managing technical quality, interfaces, scope, budget, programme and change.
  • Lead site surveys, data reviews and technical discussions with clients, operators, suppliers, contractors and technology providers.
  • Develop mechanical solutions for pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, lifting systems, screens, grit removal, odour control, packaged plant and associated treatment assets.
  • Coordinate interfaces with Process, EICA, civil/structural, architectural and construction teams, including MEP integration, access, lifting, maintainability and constructability.
  • Support CDM/safety-by-design reviews, HAZOP/SWIFT input, technical risk management, commissioning strategies and performance testing.
  • Review supplier/contractor submissions, respond to technical queries and support construction, commissioning and handover where required.
  • Mentor Engineers and Graduates and contribute to mechanical standards, templates and delivery improvements.
  • Minimum Requirements
  • BEng/MEng or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or significant CEng-level experience while actively progressing towards chartership.
  • Typically 6+ years' relevant mechanical engineering design experience.
  • Background must be from water, wastewater, biosolids/bioresources or oil & gas.
  • Proven ability to deliver mechanical design packages within multidisciplinary projects.
  • Strong practical experience with mechanical equipment selection, pumping systems, pipework, valves, hydraulics, layouts and packaged plant.
  • Ability to prepare and check mechanical calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, reports, drawings and procurement documentation.
  • Working knowledge of UK water industry standards, CDM 2015, safety-by-design and relevant mechanical requirements.
  • Good commercial awareness and ability to deliver to agreed scope, budget and programme.
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to lead technical discussions and present recommendations clearly.
  • Desirable Skills / Knowledge
  • Experience with AMP8, WINEP, SROs, D&B, framework, alliance or major capital delivery environments.
  • Experience in sludge/bioresources, water reuse, pumping stations, energy recovery, odour control, chemical dosing, package plant, offsite manufacture or low-carbon mechanical solutions.
  • Experience with BIM/3D coordination, hydraulic modelling, pump system analysis, digital calculations, Power BI, Python, VBA or advanced Excel.
  • Experience supporting FAT/SAT, commissioning, performance testing, HAZOPs, SWIFT reviews or technical assurance reviews.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and improving mechanical workflows, templates or technical standards.
