About the role
The Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) is seeking a mass spectrometry expert who is ready to join our Mass Spectrometry team as a Senior Analytical Scientist. APAF is a NATA accredited facility within the Macquarie Analytical and Fabrication Facility (MAFF), providing research support, expertise and services in proteomics to the Australian and international research community. The facility currently hosts significant infrastructure and specialist expertise in mass spectrometry based proteomics and multiomics, RNA mass spectrometry, bioinformatics, mass photometry, amino acid analysis and array technology. This role will be part of the Mass Spectrometry team at APAF, one of the four teams which make up the specialist areas of the facility (Bioinformatics, Mass Spectrometry, Protein Analysis, and Protein Interactions). Reporting to the Mass Spectrometry Technology Manager you will: Develop RNA mass spectrometry analysis workflows and implement small RNA mass spectrometry workflows at APAF; Provide expert technical support to internal and external clients, collaborators and industry partners; Contribute to the research and development of experimental methods, techniques and/or technologies; Implement new analytical procedures, and review and maintain procedures for a specialist stream; Undertake complex instrument troubleshooting and maintain laboratory instruments, equipment and maintenance schedules; Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders. APAF is part of the Macquarie Analytical and Fabrication Facility (MAFF), a shared research infrastructure facility which sits within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. APAF is also supported by Bioplatforms Australia (BPA) through funding from the Australian Government National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), and is proudly accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. MAFF includes a highly diverse range of analytical instrumentation and research facilities which include (in addition to APAF): the Macquarie University Centre for Analytical Biotechnology (MUCAB), NMR facility, Microscopy Unit, the Macquarie Engineering Technical Services workshop (METS) and the Material Characterisation and Analysis Facility (MCAF). The facility of APAF houses a range of mass spectrometers, including Orbitrap Tribrid Eclipse, Orbitrap Astral, Exploris 480, Sciex 7600s and Waters Cyclic IMS instruments, a TwoMP Mass Photometer, and other state-of-the-art specialist instrumentation. The facility has a team of expert technical staff who manage these instruments and the facilities, as well as analyse samples, develop methods and provide expert data analysis and interpretation. The facility supports research from internal and external clients through access to instrumentation with training and support from the APAF team; and through project work completed as a service by the APAF team. How to Apply To be considered for this position, applicants must address the Selection Criteria below in a separate document or covering letter and upload the document as part of the application process with their curriculum vitae. Required: Degree (preferably a postgraduate degree) in the analytical sciences including in-depth mass spectrometry; Proven experience and expert knowledge of mass spectrometry, instrumentation and data analysis particularly for characterisation of a range of biomolecules; Experience working with scientists and researchers in the execution of project specific mass spec analyses; Experience working with mass spectrometry instrument platforms and interfaced liquid chromatography equipment; Demonstrated experience building, managing and maintaining productive working relationships with key stakeholders, including interacting with scientific clients, collaborators or industry partners; Able to work autonomously and develop novel mass spectrometry centred workflows for the analysis and characterisation of biomolecules; Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, principles and practices applicable to specialist remit (including hazardous chemicals) in a laboratory environment; Desirable: Knowledge of top-down and native mass spectrometry, mass photometry, or other RNA analysis methods; Knowledge and/or experience in mass spectrometry analysis of mRNA, tRNA, siRNA and its modifications Experience in developing and reporting novel analytical methods, techniques and/or technologies; Experience working in a NATA accredited environment, or similar.
