General Description: Plans, develops and implements new driver training classes, recertification classes (to include, defensive driving, PBIS/student conduct, and first aid, CPR and AED); accident prevention classes for drivers who have avoidable accidents, and other staff development. Essential Job Functions: Prepares lesson plans for staff development using established practices of development; Coordinates and ensures accuracy of the system-wide school bus driver database, including driver information related to staff development, certification, training, retraining, and recertification. Maintains an accurate, comprehensive electronic file of all individuals completing the driver training class; Sends files of new drivers to the appropriate Area Office; Provides support to a specific Area by assisting with specific training for Area assigned drivers.. This may include training with students on board or driving to support the Area when needed; Ensures training is in compliance with VDOE, DMV and laws that govern transportation for students with special needs; Accurately maintains the school bus accident database and produces a weekly report to designate type of accident/incident, Area Office and whether the accident was avoidable or unavoidable; Develops and implements staff development opportunities that address training needs; Coordinates and supervises all Department of Motor Vehicle functions to include, 3 rd -party testing, driver record requests, and managing the "Watch List"; Coordinates the Safe Driver Awards program; Coordinates the annual School Bus Road-e-o; Conducts classroom and behind the wheel school bus driver training throughout the year, including summer sessions, that conforms to state and local procedures; files attendance sheets; Reviews current materials as they become available and recommends changes and revisions to the current training program; Provides remediation training tailored to the needs of the individual(s); Evaluates both new drivers and returning drivers according to established procedures; Conducts all training, evaluation and testing necessary and required in order for an individual to be eligible for employment once the program is completed; Coordinates the mentoring of new drivers to include new driver check-ins within 5 work days, between 7-10 work days, and 4 weeks, then, as needed; Promotes pupil ride safety by participating in selected events to include Back to School Nights, summer orientation for new, young riders, annual county fair, school career days, etc.; Handles all administrative duties related to each driver training class to ensure compliance with federal, state and local requirements to include scheduling classes, maintaining the driver database and handling the DMV required functions; Serves as a resource to drivers, assistant directors, and staff by providing staff development training information for newsletters or in-service meetings; Assists with evaluating stop locations to ensure safe pick and drop off for students, and safe maneuvering of the bus. Performs other duties as assigned. Budgetary Responsibility: N/A Report Preparation: Prepares requests for training materials to Manager of Safety and Training and the Director's Office Equipment Operation : Office equipment such as computer, keyboard, printer, facsimile, multi-line telephone, as well as equipment for classroom presentations, such as computer and video projector Contacts: Daily close and personal contact with transportation personnel and regular contact with DMV regarding licensing and testing; Department of Education for curriculum materials and resources related to training; other federal, state and local agencies that serve as resources related to training. Work Direction : Directly supervises all Bus Driver Trainers, and individuals during classroom and behind the wheel training. Supervision : Supervises new school bus driver trainees during training. Decision Making : Has authority to make decisions related to evaluation of trainees and to make recommendations regarding eligibility to become a school bus driver based on training evaluations.
