The Bronx District Attorney's Office is seeking a highly organized, compassionate, and proactive individual to support an Assistant District Attorney who is visually impaired. This individual will facilitate productivity by reading, interpreting, and assisting with tasks that require visual access. The goal is to facilitate independent functioning by providing necessary support tools and assistance to the assigned Assistant District Attorney with all aspects of Domestic Violence investigations and trial preparation including, but not limited to legal research and writing, drafting new cases, preparing affidavits, supporting depositions, discovery, court accompaniment, and second seating. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provide safe, confident-sighted guide navigation in varied environments, respecting autonomy while providing supportive assistance for mobility aid and/or adaptive technologies effectively 2. Excellent organizational and communication skills: Utilize written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to interact with legal staff and other agencies 3. Case Management: Assist with correspondence, motion responses, prepare and serve orders to produce, subpoena compliance, and Discovery obligations KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Independence: This role requires a "proactive" rather than "reactive" approach. The duties and responsibilities of a DV TPA 2 are primarily to work alongside a team of designated DV ADAs in the gathering of discovery, communication with witnesses and overall support of work needed on intimate partner cases. Each DV TPA 2 will be assigned a group of approximately 4 DV ADAs. DV TPA 2 are assigned to each case in BXDA, alongside the DV ADA, and will be able to share information on each case. - Visual Description: The ability to describe, not just read, is critical. This includes accurately describing evidence such as photos of victim injuries, and crime scene layouts . - Objectivity and Confidentiality: Provide objective, detailed, and non-interpretive descriptions of visual materials suitable for legal analysis and court use while maintaining strict confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive, graphic, or legally protected information. - Document Management & Digital Organization: Review, organize, and summarize complex legal documents, and transcripts. Prepare Discovery for new and existing cases. Compile, analyze, and redact documents in preparation of a case. Obtain necessary case materials from outside agencies such as NYPD, ACS, FDNY, for investigation and trial purposes. - Technology Assistance: Ensure efficient use of [JAWS/screen reader software] and digital case management systems. Proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe and Excel. Possesses basic understanding of visual impairments and how they interact with technology. - Drafting & Filing: Assist with drafting and filing motions and other court documents - Research: Assist with legal research on Westlaw/LexisNexis. - Communication: Assist with correspondence, managing telephone calls, and scheduling. Provide communication in various environments including courtrooms and office spaces. Communicate with courtroom staff and judges in a professional and non-disruptive manner. Correspondence/Complainant Contact - Initiate victim contact, draft introductory letters, contact victims/witness, and provide a status update on cases. - Prepare letters and email Orders of Protection to witnesses, defense counsel, and legal staff daily. - Notify Officers, EMTS, and medical staff for trial. Motion Responses - Assist with drafting motions to consolidate cases. - Prepare ATF, COCs, statements of readiness and affidavits of service.
