About the role

At quip, we design and deliver delightful products and services to keep all mouths healthy. quip is looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (Product Lifecycle) to own the technical lifecycle of our hardware. In this role, you are the dedicated technical lead for specific product verticals. You will lead the engineering of New Product Introductions (NPI) while also taking primary ownership of existing products already in production. You aren't just a designer; you are responsible for a product's long-term health, evolution, and success. You will define the technical requirements for validation and reliability, utilize field data to drive Continuous Improvements (CI), and lead the forensic analysis that defines quip's hardware standards. This role is full time on-site in our DUMBO, Brooklyn design studio. Base Salary: $155k to $175k This range represents anticipated base salary range for this position, in addition to competitive benefits and equity (as applicable). Responsibilities

  • New Product Development (NPD)
  • Technical Leadership: Lead the mechanical engineering and reliability workstreams for New Product Development. Partner with Quality, Product, and Industrial Design to ensure new architectures are robust and influenced by lessons learned from existing field data.
  • Analytical Optimization: Drive design optimization through analytical and experimental methods, including FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and Design of Experiments (DOE).
  • Design Reviews & Risk: Lead formal design reviews and serve as the technical lead for FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis). Utilize engineering expertise to identify potential failure modes and implement design-based mitigations.
  • Validation & Reliability Planning: Author technical test plans and procedures for product validation. While you will leverage global suppliers to execute much of the testing, you are responsible for defining the protocols and auditing the results.
  • Prototyping & Fixturing: When needed, design and build custom test fixtures, jigs, and automated test rigs in-house to facilitate rapid internal validation and failure replication.
  • Technical Documentation: Maintain the complete engineering package for your products, including CAD models, 2D drawings, and material specifications.
  • Continuous Improvement (CI) & VA/VE
  • Mechanical Optimization: Execute design changes and DFM (Design for Manufacturing) updates for products already in production to enhance durability, performance, and yield.
  • Value Engineering (VA/VE): Proactively identify and lead Value Analysis and Value Engineering initiatives. Evaluate existing designs and manufacturing processes for cost-reduction opportunities and efficiency gains without compromising quip's quality standards.
  • Forensic RCA & Technical CAPA
  • Forensic Failure Analysis: Lead the lab-based physical disassembly and forensic autopsy of field returns (RMAs). Identify root causes across mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Technical CAPA Ownership: Drive the end-to-end Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) process. You own the path from identifying a failure to implementing and verifying the mechanical fix in production.
  • Technical Supplier Management: Serve as the primary technical lead for Contract Manufacturers (CMs). Lead on-site technical line audits, approve supplier fixtures, and validate that factory processes meet your technical specifications.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in Design Engineering, with a focus on high-volume electronic consumer products
  • 6+ years Experience working with Asian suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Solidworks - high proficiency with surfacing, multi-body master modeling, simulation, assemblies, and 2D drafting
  • High cavitation injection molding and machining process experience
  • Deep knowledge of materials, processes, assembly, electronics, and production methods
  • Strong sense of high-volume data as an input to engineering analysis
  • Track record of outreach to subject matter experts and referring to industrial guides and standards to solve complex problems or answer difficult questions
  • Ability to deftly and rapidly create proof-of-concept and cosmetic prototypes using a mix of outsourced and in-house fabrication methods
  • Extensive experience collaborating with suppliers through DFM, including optimizing mold designs and utilizing mold flow analysis
  • Working experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerance stack analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Strong project management skills to manage a broad set of tasks and responsibilities
  • Ability to travel internationally 2-3 times per year to be on-site at suppliers.
  • Ability to attend evening calls with suppliers 1-2 nights per week.
