About the role

The world is electrifying. As we plug in more devices and services, we need new ways to connect to power. The traditional, one-size-fits-all utility approach - with complicated bills and frustrating customer service - no longer works. At Light, we make it easy to get affordable, renewable electricity by embedding power with the products that consumers already use, from the companies they love. Light's mission is to power a sustainable and abundant energy future for everyone. With Light's utility-as-API platform, companies from automakers and solar providers to real estate and beyond can offer their own, integrated electricity plans. Imagine purchasing an electric vehicle that includes unlimited home charging, or solar panels that come bundled with any excess energy you might need from the grid. At Light, we're creating a flexible future where any company can offer their own branded electricity plans and make clean energy convenient for their customers. Join us in building the digital energy infrastructure for a dynamic, sustainable future. Light is hiring its second Product Designer. You'll own your own research-to-production design process across verticals and market expansion, working in a genuine design partnership where the quality bar raises through ongoing two-way critique. You'll research categories most designers haven't worked in, find the moments that determine whether a customer commits to an energy plan, and ship your work. This is also a role where you'll help establish design culture at Light while the company is still early enough for it to matter.

Responsibilities

  • You'll own the screens you touch and contribute to a shared quality standard through active critique with our design lead. You'll also help build the research process the team operates from: how we recruit, which methods we use at which stages, and how findings inform direction.
  • In six months, success looks like:
  • You've identified and acted on high-value inflection points across at least two focus areas. A design team culture is forming, with a shared quality bar and a research process the team actually uses. Cross-functional teams trust your judgment.
  • You would describe yourself as
  • Someone who can drop into a category they know nothing about, figure out what actually matters to customers, and design from that insight rather than assumptions
  • A journey mapper who thinks in inflection points: you want to know where a customer decides to commit or walk, not just where they clicked
  • A designer with more than one research method who validates ideas before investing company resources on shipping
  • Someone who isn't satisfied by the first direction and explores a wide range of approaches before converging, with a portfolio that shows the breadth
  • Someone who works fluently within an established design system and raises the quality bar through partnership and critique
  • Comfortable being the person in the room who says "the research says otherwise" and can back it up
  • Someone who can establish a design game plan on their own and bring others along on the thinking
  • 5+ years of product design experience, or a portfolio that makes the years irrelevant
  • Based in Austin. This role is in a collaborative office with friendly teammates, with work-from-anywhere flexibility in July.
