Why is this role important? The Lead Product Designer for PSI (Public Space Incubator) plays a pivotal role in driving design-led solutions through strategic consultation and cross-functional collaboration. This role is responsible for exploring and shaping future product opportunities, clarifying UX research needs, and continuously elevating the broader design practice. The role will participate in an international consortium and lead the foundational work for future design ops. Working Team & Dynamics: Strategic Autonomy: Operating outside traditional product squad structures, this role partners directly with Product Managers, external stakeholders, and Tech Leads to identify and solve audience needs holistically. Future-Mapping: Collaborates closely with PMs, Developers, and UX Researchers and Accessibility Engineers to evaluate emergent audience needs that will inform the future product roadmap. Design Enablement: Works with a squad of integration Product Designers to provide direction on design hierarchy, priorities, and conceptual execution. Peer Collaboration: Works in tandem with Developers on a project-by-project basis and coordinates with design peers across other public broadcasting organizations to share insights and standards. Occasional Travel: This role might require occasional travel outside of Canada to meet with our European and Australian partners. Key Responsibilities & Daily Impact: Design Governance & Systems System Oversight: Guide the evolution of the PSI design system, establishing and maintaining high design standards and documentation governance. High-Fidelity Frameworks: Deliver well-documented, accessible design concepts and component frameworks in Figma to streamline developer handoff. Inclusive Design: Ensure inclusive design and strict AODA/WCAG accessibility standards are foundational to all user experiences. Team Leadership & Practice Design Prioritization: Participate in scoping and prioritizing incoming design requests while providing constructive, growth-oriented feedback to the team. Onboarding & Mentorship: Lead the onboarding process for new designers entering the PSI space, setting them up for long-term success. Agile Delivery: Maintain clear communication and alignment within agile environments, utilizing Kanban and iterative delivery practices. Technical & Analytical Aptitude Technical Literacy: Collaborate effectively within technical workflows (familiarity with Git repositories is an asset to bridge the design-to-development gap). Data-Informed: Utilize data and user analytics to validate design hypotheses and measure product impact. We are looking for a candidate with the following: Applied digital product design experience and a portfolio of work showing strong product design experience. Degree in a digital product design-related field, or equivalent work experience. 5+ years of experience in Web Design and proficiency in Figma and other design tools. We prefer candidates who have: Experience designing for news organizations and understanding conversational spaces like forums and social commentary, content websites or information-heavy product experiences. Created complex design systems An ability to communicate clearly in spoken and written English.
