Job Summary The Manger, HLI Preclinical Services, will provide leadership in the overall management of largest Core within the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation. Organizational Status The Manager, HLI Preclinical Services Facility will report directly to the Centre's Director and Associate Directors. Work Performed Leadership and Direction - Provides leadership and direction in the operational planning to maintain improved productivity and efficiency in the HLI; oversees operations and functional managing animal care activities, facility maintenance, renovation, and space utilization. - Provides direction to all animal research activities at HLI, and provides authoritative information to investigators on experimental design, procedures and equipment. - Liaises with principal investigators, user groups, employees, UBC and VCH departments, vendors, and other industry professionals regularly to anticipate and determine changing space requirements. - Selects, interviews, trains, evaluates performance of supervisors, and disciplines employee for specialized technical personnel. Leads or participates in meetings involving employee performance. - Oversees work schedules to meet project requirements. Designs project timelines and workflow such as setting priorities and goals, forecasting and monitoring expenditures and providing expertise in the field of animal research. - Actively investigates and monitors facility to prevent employee accidents, promote first aid training and programs, and safe operations in the animal care facility. Works with Workplace Health Services and Risk Management to support Remain at Work and Return to Work programs. - Responsible HLI PRECLINICAL SERVICES for budgetary control in conjunction with and equipment, material, and supplies budgets. Advises HLI leadership on budgetary matters affecting the animal research facility. Prepares cost data for proposals. - Plans, develops, and decides on standard operating procedures related to animal health and care, employees, facilities, equipment, and supplies. Facility Operations and Planning - Manages the renovations of available space with the Manager, Facilities and Operations, HLI Planning and other departments to ensure timely and appropriate space requirements for changes in animal population. - Oversees the maintenance, repair, installation, and removal of equipment within the animal care facility. - Oversees all education and training provided in all aspects of daily operations of the HLI CL2 Rooms involving animals for staff and researchers. - Ensures that the care of animals and condition of facility environment are in compliance with CCAC regulations and conducts regular inspections of animal care and use facility. Supervises the preparation and maintenance of detailed and accurate records keeping meeting CCAC requirements. - Works with the Veterinarian to review and research applications for both Biological Entry and Shipping and Receipt of Rodents. Responsible for the approval process Preclinical Services animal procurement. - Responsible for and provides final approval for user access to animal care facility. - Advises leadership regarding potential issues affecting the use of animals in research and education. - Oversees the post-approval monitoring of research protocols through site visits, record review, and meetings with animal users to ensure animal use protocols and standard operating procedures are applied in practice as approved in principle by the ACC. Receives, reviews, and resolves complaints or issues of animal program non-compliance or potential non-compliance. - Develops and oversees Health Monitoring reports and accompanies the PAM Veterinarian / Compliance Officer on site visits including summarization and
