About the role
Prepares laboratory specimens for microscopic evaluation by the pathologist using microtomy, special staining, immunohistochemistry, and other appropriate techniques. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Prepares specimen using the appropriate technique required to produce an acceptable sample for evaluation by the pathologist Follows established procedures for histology quality control, CAP, JCAHO, other regulatory agencies and reports discrepancies in a timely manner Performs scheduled and as needed maintenance on equipment routinely used in specimen preparation Troubleshoots equipment, reagents, or procedural technique when problems occur Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job‑related hazards Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives Assists with the orientation of new histology lab employees Maintains work area-cleans bench, restocks supplies notifies Histology Technical Specialist of low stock Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:
- Education and Formal Training :
- Associate's degree required
- Histotechnician certification (ASCP) eligibility required OR completed a technician training program or on-the-job hospital training with 4 years' experience which will be evaluated and approved by Laboratory Directors

- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required :
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
- Possess knowledge/skill of appropriate collection techniques
- Interacts with patients according to the Erickson model of development
- Skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team
- Physical Requirements :
- Lifting up to 25 pounds
- General motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to speak plainly
- Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors
- May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
