About the role

Location: Edgbaston Birmingham UK Salary: Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,062 to £31,900, with potential progression once in post to £35,883 Role Summary At Genomics Birmingham, our mission is simple: to enable excellent science. We are not a commercial CRO-we exist to support researchers, reduce experimental risk, and deliver high-quality, reproducible data across genomic and proteomic research. We are seeking an experienced Senior Research Technician to join our CMH Infrastructure and Facilities team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art facility supporting cutting-edge platforms including Illumina sequencing (MiSeq, NextSeq, NovaSeq), Oxford Nanopore (PromethION), 10x Genomics (Chromium and Visium), and Olink proteomics (Signature Q100). Role Overview You will provide technical expertise across a broad portfolio of genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic services. You will play a key role in delivering high-quality experimental workflows, supporting researchers, troubleshooting complex issues, and contributing to the continuous development of our services. Main Duties Process research samples including RNA/DNA extraction, QC (Qubit, TapeStation), and NGS library preparation Operate sequencing and proteomic platforms (Illumina, Olink) Support single-cell and spatial workflows (10x Genomics) Utilise automated liquid handling systems (Hamilton, Dragonfly, Formulatrix) Troubleshoot and optimise experimental workflows Advise and support researchers and students on experimental design and techniques Maintain accurate records, SOPs, and ensure compliance with H&S and regulatory standards Contribute to laboratory management, equipment maintenance, and stock control Support training and mentoring of junior staff Person specification About You. You will bring: A degree (or equivalent experience) in a life sciences discipline Strong hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques Experience with NGS workflows and/or RNA/DNA extraction and analysis Willingness to learn to work with complex instrumentation and laboratory systems Confidence working with complex instrumentation and laboratory systems Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively A proactive, service-focused approach and commitment to high-quality science Experience with single-cell technologies, Olink proteomics, or automation platforms is desirable but not essential.
