Responsibilities
- Work is performed under general supervision.
- Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Provides excellent customer service to members of the department, public, and law enforcement community
- Receives, observes, and inspects submitted items to determine compliance with established standards
- Conducts follow up with personnel to address errors in submission or documentation procedures
- Utilize bar-coding RFID system for storage and movement accuracy
- Maintains computer records, documentation, and chain of custody for property/evidence items
- Transports items to forensic laboratory, and arranges shipping of items as needed
- Verifies currency accepted into evidence security, and conducts disbursements as necessary to citizens, School Boards, NC Department of Revenue, and Clerk of Courts offices as directed.
- Conducts inventories, audits, and inspections as required
- Prepares statistical reports related to duties as required
- Researches cases to determine adjudication status and candidacy for return/disposition
- Completes evidence destruction procedures through all stages to include research, transportation to disposal sites, and witnessing disposal methods
- Prepares items for public auction processes, arranges transfers, and maintains related documents
- Trains new officers and new crime lab employees in proper evidence packaging procedures and new developments or trends related to evidence security
- Communicates with the public, department members, court officials, and other law enforcement agencies daily via telephone, written communication, and email
- Assists District Attorney's office in trial preparation related to evidence and testifies as required
- Operates motor vehicle, multiple computer programs, police radio, and office equipment in performance of duties
- Maintains credentials for and utilizes multiple web-based systems in the performance of duties
- Works with a variety of hazardous items, including weapons, narcotics, body fluids, flammable and explosive material ensuring all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
- Special requirements
- Education - High School graduate or GED equivalent
- Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of the work required, successful completion of a polygraph and background investigation is required.
- Valid d river's l icense.
- Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
- Must be familiar with computer programs in spreadsheets, databases, and word processing
- Must be able to work as a team with members of the Forensic Section
- Must understand and be able to manage a financial ledger of credits and debits
- Must be able to handle multiple ongoing projects, prioritize tasks, and work efficiently under general supervision
- Work requires the exercise of initiative and independent judgment while using established work methods and procedures.
- Learn applicable federal, state, and local criminal laws, codes, and regulations as it pertains to evidence matters
- Maintain storage, security, and accounting procedures for sensitive, valuable, and unusual items, supplies, and equipment, as well as confidential information related to cases
- Must obtain and maintain DCI certification from the State of North Carolina
