About the role
The purpose of this position is to operate patient transport vehicles, including emergency vehicles, patient transport vans/buses and other types transport vehicles, capable of carrying up to 8 or more passengers, to and from VA Medical Center facilities, private healthcare facilities, and other private sector areas like patient homes, railway, bus stations and airports. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, the ability to perform the work of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision. Related experience includes the ability to independently perform the full range of motor vehicle operation; operate various types of gasoline and/or diesel-powered vehicles (e.g., sedans, station wagons, vans, pick-ups, ambulances) to transport patients and cargo; operate passenger buses, platform, van, stake, and dump trucks; operate vehicles equipped with lift-gates, spreaders, blades, electrically, hydraulically and/or mechanically operated; highly skilled in inspecting vehicles and performing operator maintenance (e.g., monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, and washing the vehicle) before operating them to ensure that they are clean and in safe operating condition; highly skilled in determining the shortest and safest routes to travel, can recognize hazardous conditions, and can alter routes to avoid them; ability to perform duties utilizing radio communications techniques that conform to applicable communication standards; knowledgeable and ability to locate, extract, and present information in a clear and effective manner, providing accurate information to management, employees, and patients; skilled in operating, starting, stopping, backing, and driving a Mobile Medical Unit. Associated duties require stooping, bending, lifting, climbing, and securing patients, oxygen, and wheelchairs with appropriate securing devices. Lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier. Must follow prescribed safety procedures using appropriate lifting methods and body mechanics for heavy lifting or moving of heavy objects.
