The Maintenance Development Manager (internally known as RAMS Manager) is responsible for leading and coordinating all aspects of Train Maintenance Plan development balancing requirements for Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety activities. This is a strategic role that sits within the projects team, ensuring that systems and products meet regulatory, safety, operational and technical standards throughout their lifecycle, applying recognised RAMS and systems engineering methodologies to support decision-making and fleet performance. This is a permanent role based at our Temple Mills depot in Leyton. Hybrid working is available, with the expectation you attend site a minimum of 4 days per week. Internal reference only: This is a grade E role, travel services 3-4. Lead the development and optimisation of fleet maintenance plans, balancing Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS). Analyse performance data to prioritise reliability improvement initiatives, reducing MTBF failures and unplanned downtime using structured methodologies (e.g. RCA, FMECA, FRACAS). Optimise maintenance cycles, exam planning and fleet downtime, aligning with supply chain, spares, tooling and obsolescence strategies. Drive maintainability improvements by influencing engineering changes, improving task sequencing, and embedding efficient, cost-effective maintenance practices. Champion innovation in maintenance, including condition-based monitoring, diagnostics, predictive maintenance and whole-life cost optimisation. Lead safety assessments, hazard identification and risk mitigation activities, ensuring compliance with standards and supporting safety case development. Contribute to technical governance and reporting, including audits, design reviews, risk registers, and business case development for senior stakeholders. You'll need... A degree in an engineering‑related discipline, with professional registration at Incorporated Engineer level or above (or working towards Chartered) is preferred however candidates with significant related experience will be considered 5-8 years' experience in rail vehicles and maintenance workstreams Strong capability in reliability analytics tools including FRACAS, FMECA, FTA, and RCA technique is desirable Proven experience in rolling stock maintenance, including maintenance plan evolution, exam balancing, RCM, hybrid/CBM strategies, LCC and reliability‑driven techniques. Strong soft skills including communication, analytical thinking, and stakeholder engagement. Ability to lead RAMS activities across engineering workstreams, ensuring compliance with regulatory, safety, operational, and technical standards.
