About the role
MicroVision is at the forefront of driving the global adoption of innovative perception solutions, with the goal of making mobility and autonomy safer. Our engineering excellence, based in Washington State, Washington D.C., Hamburg, Germany and Orlando, Florida, enables us to develop and supply integrated lidar hardware and perception software solutions. Our proprietary technologies enhance safety and automation across various industrial applications, including robotics, automated warehouses, and agriculture, and are instrumental in the development of autonomous systems. MicroVision's core technology, initially developed for the automotive industry, continues to accelerate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Building on our history of providing technology to the military segment, our target offerings include semi- and fully autonomous airborne and terrestrial sensor systems. With our solid-state lidar technologies, encompassing FMCW and MEMS-based long-range lidar and flash-based short-range lidar, integrated with our onboard perception software, MicroVision possesses the expertise to deliver safe mobility at the speed of life. To strengthen our team at the Orlando location, we are looking for a Senior Electrical Engineering Technician. As a key member of MicroVision's Hardware Design Engineering team, you will provide critical hands-on technical support across hardware development, laboratory operations, and product build activities for automotive LiDAR products. The Senior Engineering Electrical Technician is a highly skilled, hands-on technical resource responsible for supporting hardware development and validation activities across MicroVision's engineering teams. This role demands expert-level bench skills including BGA rework, complex hand wiring modifications, and precision small electronics assembly. In addition to direct hardware support, this individual serves as the Engineering Lab Manager for the Orlando facility, owning laboratory compliance. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable executing intricate rework on cutting-edge hardware and ensuring the lab operates as a safe, organized, and compliant environment.
Responsibilities
- Hardware Rework and Assembly
- Perform expert-level BGA rework including reflow, reballing, and site preparation on densely populated, fine-pitch PCBAs using hot air, IR, and BGA rework station equipment
- Execute complex white wire modifications and point-to-point hand wiring on prototype and engineering builds, including routing under components and through constrained board areas
- Perform precision soldering and rework on fine-pitch SMD components, through-hole assemblies, RF connectors, flex cables, and other small or delicate electronic assemblies
- Assess rework feasibility and risk on new designs, providing feedback to engineers on pad geometry, component accessibility, and recommended rework approaches
- Document all rework activities with photographic records, rework logs, and updated assembly notes to support traceability and design learning
- Hardware Testing
- Execute electrical test procedures on prototype and production PCBAs, including power sequencing verification, functional checkout, parametric measurements, and boundary scan or ICT support
- Operate standard laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, power supplies, DMMs, logic analyzers, and signal generators; support automated test script execution for board-level functional verification
- Perform small mechanical assembly and disassembly including torque-sensitive fastening, optical component handling, and connector/cable management; operate optical measurement equipment such as beam profilers and power meters as directed
- Support mechanical and optical test setups for LiDAR subsystems, including beam alignment, optical path verification, and sensor positioning using precision fixturing and alignment tools
- Document and communicate test results clearly, flagging anomalies and supporting root cause investigation with engineering staff; observe proper ESD and contamination control protocols when handling sensitive components
- Engineering Lab Management
- Serve as the primary lab manager for MicroVision's Orlando engineering labs, maintaining a safe, organized, and audit-ready environment that keeps the hardware development team fully operational
- Own consumables and equipment inventory, including purchase requests as well as calibration and maintenance scheduling for lab instruments
- Maintain lab compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (ESH) requirements, including chemical storage, soldering fume extraction, fire safety, and hazardous material handling & disposal
- Develop and maintain lab procedures, safety protocols, and work instructions, and coordinate with engineers, facilities and IT to ensure labs remain properly equipped and resourced
