The primary purpose of this position is to provide support and assistance for the smooth operation of the Fitness Center Program to include customer service, monitoring customer entry, instructs in the proper conditioning and training for muscular fitness, maintaining facility requirements in fire, safety, health and cleanliness, initiating and maintaining files. The physical/medical requirements of this position as determined are: The employee's work requires considerable physical exertion to be involved in overseeing total fitness facilities and activities. The physical exertion will also entail lifting weight equipment such as dumbbells and weight plates that can exceed 55 lbs. Also, bending, stooping, lifting of moderately heavy items, and walking and standing for long periods may be required. In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series 0189. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-04, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes proving support and assistance to management in fitness centers by administering fitness and sports programs and special events/programs. OR EDUCATION: Successfully completed a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, if required. NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-04 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-05 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Basic knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions in order to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. 2. General knowledge of fitness equipment set up, adjustment, operating procedures, and required safety rules and regulations. 3. Knowledge of standard office equipment, such as desktop computer, copiers, fax machines and office automation systems to perform a substantial range of office automation support, along with the knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare material correctly. 4. Skill in administering fitness testing and FIP Classes. 5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 6. Ability to follow established safety standards and procedures. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
