About the role

AGL's HSE Power Development, Energy Hubs and Construction team are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor. Based in Newcastle, you will provide strong H&S leadership across contractor‑heavy projects. You'll work closely with project, commercial, procurement and legal teams to ensure health and safety requirements are clear, risk‑based and aligned to WHS legislation. In this role, you'll act as a trusted client-side safety specialist, coaching others on their responsibilities and ensuring effective health and safety oversight of works. You'll also travel to sites to conduct assurance activities, verify critical controls, engage with contractors, and monitor performance against contractual and HSMS requirements. Responsibilities

  • Developing and improving health and safety performance across different sites and assets, while collaborating across business units
  • Develop, review and improve H&S clauses and schedules across multiple contracting models (PC, EPC, D&C).
  • Overseeing contractor health and safety through comprehensive reviews and advising on contract requirements, tender evaluations and implementation of contractor assurance programs
  • Providing technical health and safety input to major projects from concept to handover, including risk assessments, design support and ensuring compliance with project management frameworks
  • Creating assurance activities and reviewing incident investigations to ensure compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements
  • Champion the Health and Safety reporting platform, enabling teams to use it confidently and consistently, and leverage the data to identify trends, verify critical control performance, and inform leadership decision‑making.

Requirements

  • Tertiary qualification in Health and Safety, or related discipline (diploma or above)
  • Experience on client-side health and safety contractor management (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience developing or reviewing H&S requirements in contracts across diverse contracting models.
  • Ability to travel regularly to project sites.
  • Demonstrated experience in auditing, governance, assurance activities and incident investigation
  • Ability to translate complex safety requirements into practical solutions, with a client-focused mindset
  • Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence outcomes across diverse teams]
