About the role
The Payroll Lead is responsible for the governance, control, and compliant delivery of payroll operations across multiple European jurisdictions. Your Key Duties & Responsibilities Own and oversee end-to-end payroll processing across multiple European countries, ensuring accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and audit readiness Ensure payroll operations comply with all local tax, labour, social security, and statutory reporting requirements, in line with internal policies and regulatory standards Maintain an effective payroll control framework, including segregation of duties, validation checks, approval workflows, and up-to-date process documentation Manage and monitor the performance of third-party payroll providers, ensuring adherence to contractual obligations, SLAs, and quality standards, while proactively managing risks and exceptions Support internal and external audits, including control walkthroughs, documentation, and timely resolution of audit findings Identify control gaps, risks, and process inefficiencies, and lead the implementation of standardisation, automation, and process improvements Collaborate with HR, Finance, Legal, and Internal Controls to ensure payroll processes align with broader governance, compliance, and financial reporting frameworks Act as a subject matter expert on payroll operations, resolving complex issues and escalating where appropriate Provide clear and timely communication on payroll status, risks, and dependencies to senior stakeholders, including the Payroll Senior Manager Lead day-to-day team operations, including work allocation, performance management, coaching, and development Monitor and analyse payroll KPIs and operational metrics to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities Key Requirements 8+ years of experience in payroll, HR, finance, or tax compliance 2+ years of people management experience, with demonstrated ability to lead and develop teams Proven experience managing multi-country European payroll operations within a controlled, audit-driven environment Strong knowledge of European payroll legislation, statutory compliance, and regulatory frameworks Experience with payroll systems and providers such as Workday, ADP, SAP, TMF, or similar platforms Familiarity with process improvement or project methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, project management) is advantageous Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, build trust, and engage stakeholders Excellent communication skills, with experience interacting with senior stakeholders, auditors, and external providers Ability to manage ambiguity, competing priorities, and a fast-paced environment Strong analytical and risk assessment capabilities, with experience identifying and remediating control gaps and process inefficiencies
Requirements
- Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Management, or related field
- CIPP or equivalent payroll qualification is a plus

- English: Fluent (written and spoken)
