About the role

TidalSense is a respiratory technology company with a mission to transform the diagnosis, monitoring and management of chronic respiratory conditions, such as asthma and COPD. We are seeking an Embedded Engineer to join our Hardware Team. We are at an exciting phase in our journey as we transition from a start-up to a scale-up. You will be joining a passionate, socially-motivated and multi-disciplinary team covering engineers, scientists, clinicians, designers, product and usability specialists. This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious individual to develop firmware solutions that will drive development and commercialisation of our medical devices, delivering life changing impacts in the real world. We are seeking someone who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, agile, diverse team environment, and who is committed to our mission to revolutionise respiratory medicine. Job purpose To develop firmware used in connected medical devices, developing robust, secure and regulatory compliant code that supports connectivity and device management. Key duties & responsibilities Device & Connectivity Management Design, develop / architect, debug and test C++ code for connected medical devices Write and execute tests that verify embedded medical device requirements (including hardware verification), and carry out code reviews Collaborate with the back-end development team to enable cloud support for new hardware / embedded features Regulatory & Compliance Operate within a regulatory environment to prepare clear and concise documentation for the medical device technical files to comply with applicable device standards and country regulations. Operational Support Act as technical advisor to support customer operations, centralised fault management and service level monitoring Methodically investigate, reproduce and resolve firmware issues raised by operations teams Skills & Competencies Essential Able to write clean embedded C++ following modern software engineering practices Able to design robust and secure systems and "edge-to-cloud" pipelines Able to design and implement clean, maintainable code that prioritises simplicity and safety over overly-complex architectures Familiar with benchtop testing equipment (eg oscilloscopes, logic analysers etc) Possessing strong "soft-skills", with the ability to: Operate with high autonomy and ownership, Find solutions to difficult problems, Offer clear, strategic direction backed by concise reasoning, Collaborate effectively across teams to deliver technical projects, and Write clear, concise, high quality technical documentation Good working knowledge of software configuration management, e.g. Git, CI/CD Excellent working knowledge of secure software development practices Able to deliver to deadlines and be pragmatic, not dogmatic Desirable Embedded Systems development using an RTOS (e.g. FreeRTOS) Working with data transfer formats and connectivity protocols (https, CBOR, MQTT, REST APIs) Python skills for data analysis (NumPy, pandas, Jupyter) Experience of using IoT devices connected via public mobile networks. Knowledge of EU MDR and FDA medical device regulations Working under international regulatory standards ISO 13485, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 27001 Qualifications & Experience Essential At least 3 years of C++ in resource constrained environments Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Science, Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent professional experience Desirable Experience working in regulated environments eg medical devices, aerospace or automotive Working on 'edge-to-cloud' IoT solutions on major cloud platforms Other Requirements Legally eligible to work in the UK.
