About the role

Drivability Calibration Engineer is responsible for developing, tuning, and validating engine and vehicle control strategies to ensure smooth, responsive, and comfortable vehicle performance across all operating conditions (start, idle, transient, part-load, and full-load).

Responsibilities

  • Drivability Calibration Development
  • Develop and optimize drivability calibration for:
  • Gasoline engines (MPFI, TGDI)
  • Diesel engines (CRDi systems)
  • Calibrate:
  • Tip-in / Tip-out response
  • Torque structure and request coordination
  • Transient fuel, rail pressure, and boost control
  • Injection strategies (Diesel: pilot, main, post injections)
  • Idle control, cold start, and warm-up behavior
  • Tune pedal maps for different drive modes (Eco/Normal/Sport)
  • Torque & System Coordination
  • Ensure robust torque arbitration between:
  • EMS and TCU (MT/AMT/AT/DCT)
  • Optimize:
  • Shift quality (torque reduction, ramp-in/out)
  • Clutch engagement behavior
  • Coordinate with:
  • Air path (EGR, VGT, throttle)
  • Aftertreatment systems (DOC, DPF, SCR impact on drivability)
  • Validation & Testing
  • Perform subjective and objective drivability evaluations
  • Define and track KPIs:
  • Surge / Bucking index
  • Hesitation / turbo lag
  • Tip-in delay & torque hole
  • Low-speed behavior (creep, crawl)
  • Diesel-specific NVH (combustion noise, torque oscillations)
  • Plan and execute:
  • City / highway / hill / hot & cold condition tests
  • Use tools:
  • ETAS INCA / CANape / AVL Drive
  • Data acquisition systems (V-Box, iCDM/vCDM)
  • Issue Analysis & Debugging
  • Identify and resolve P0/P1 drivability issues
  • Perform root cause analysis using:
  • Measurement data
  • System interaction understanding
  • Conduct:
  • On-road calibration refinement
  • Rapid issue resolution during test trips
  • Integration & Cross-functional Coordination
  • Work with:
  • Combustion & Base Calibration Teams
  • Transmission & Hybrid Control Teams
  • OBD and Emissions Teams
  • Ensure drivability trade-off alignment with:
  • Emissions (BS6/Euro norms)
  • Fuel efficiency targets
  • NVH requirements

Requirements

  • B.E, M.Tech (Mechanical, Automobile, Mechatronics).
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experienced in technically leading / working on calibration development projects
  • Excellent knowledge of powertrain systems and sub-systems
  • Good knowledge of developing engine management systems and testing techniques
  • Ability to use model-based calibration tools e.g. Inca, Uniplot, Cameo, ASCMO, AVL Puma, etc.
