Department Athletics Job Description Job Summary Responsible for planning, developing, and coaching the team within Smith College and NCAA Division III rules and regulations. Responsible for the recruitment and development of competitive scholar-athletes. Act as a supervisor and/or mentor to an assistant coach (s). Take appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participate in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. Essential Functions Sport Instruction (50%): Plan an instructional practice and competitive schedule for rowing based on an assessment of the student-athletes' needs including pre and post season. Conduct organized and objective based practices. Enhance individual as well as team skills. Utilize various coaching strategies. Improve athletes' talents, skills, and development of self. Demonstrate and communicate expertise and knowledge of sport. Sustain a level of excellence in the quality of student experience and competitive success. Be knowledgeable of and abide by all college policies, NCAA (division III) policies, and conference requirements. Abide by NCAA rules. Sport Operations (20%): Plan, organize, direct, and lead the operations for the sport programs including budgeting, traveling, purchasing, facility usage. Create budget expenditures for uniforms and equipment. Follow budget plan and stay within planned amounts. Assist in scheduling opponents, contacting opposing coaches to verify dates or make plans to attend special tournaments, training trips. Responsible for equipment and uniform inventory, meal arrangements, travel plans, coordination of facility usage, and daily practice plans. Attend league meetings and stay current with the development of each sport. Recruitment (30%): Recruit prospective scholar-athletes to attend Smith College and who participate on the team. Encourage applications by a diverse group, in support of the Smith mission. Develop an annual recruiting plan, identifying specific outcomes to be achieved. Maintain database of information regarding recruiting, including number of contacts, number applied, number visited, number accepted, and number enrolled, with regards to a breakdown of women of color in recruited pool. Correspond with prospects using a variety of communication channels; including written, in person contact, phone, home visits, official visits Communicate with admissions office identifying potential candidates. Minimum Qualifications Required: Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 3-5 years relevant coaching experience or an equivalent combination of intercollegiate playing and/or coaching experience. Preference given to candidates with prior successful collegiate head coaching and collegiate teaching experience. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
