About the role

This position works as a File/Scanning Clerk in the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) of the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Micheal E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC), Houston, TX. Performs duties related to the collecting, preparing, scanning, indexing, and quality review of paper health and administrative documents that are to be included in the patient's permanent medical record and/or administrative file. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/29/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: For a GS-05 position candidates may be advanced without time restriction to position is up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: General Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience communicating orally and in writing with individuals from varied backgrounds; experience in operating various types of office automation equipment and software; experience operating a personal computer or computer terminal using a standard typewriter style keyboard with additional function keys to produce work accurately; experience with content and format of medical and administrative records to assure the documents are indexed to the correct document title and system of records; experience with delivery and retrieval of electronic and paper documents upon request. This experience must be supported by your resume to be creditable. OR Education: Successfully completed 2 years above high school in any field for which high school graduation is the prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is normal prerequisite. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. OR Combination: I possess an equivalent combination of successfully completed post-high school education and specialized experience as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level.
