Position Description The McGill University Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be determined according to the successful candidate's qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year (renewable) appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The successful candidate will be appointed to clinical practice, specializing in spine surgery, at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro), within the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The MUHC is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada's internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The McGill University Health Centre includes major McGill University-affiliated teaching hospitals at several sites in downtown Montreal. Neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and interventional neuroradiologists provide tertiary in-patient and out-patient care, engage in a wide range of clinical and basic neuroscience research, and lead strong clinical neuroscience teaching programs in undergraduate and postgraduate medicine at the Montreal Neurological Hospital and Institute, the Montreal General Hospital, and McGill University. The Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery is affiliated with McGill, Canada's most international university, which is located in vibrant, multicultural Montreal, in the francophone province of Quebec. The neuroscience community at McGill and in greater Montreal is one of the largest and most diverse in North America. The Neuro has embarked on a journey to set a global precedent as the first academic institute to fully embrace the principles of Open Science. In that context, the Institute highly encourages its researchers to work under these principles. Job Duties The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a strong clinical and research program, and be expected to be actively involved in relevant aspects of McGill's academic mission (e.g., teaching, supervision of graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). The incumbent will also be expected to provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to residents and medical students, and to pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care and/or clinical research in the area of spine neurosurgery. Protected research time and laboratory resources within the Montreal Neurological Institute will be available to candidates with exceptional research potential. McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected. Qualifications and Education Requirements Candidates must: Hold, or be eligible for, licensure as a neurosurgeon in the province of Quebec; Have advanced training and a demonstrated capacity to excel in academic neurosurgery, specifically spine neurosurgery; Have excellent medical education skills and a well-defined research program; Being familiar with endoscopic spine surgery and anterior and lateral approaches to lumbar spine would be considered an asset; Be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas; Clinician-Scientists with MD-PhD, or equivalent research-intensive training, are strongly encouraged to apply; Clinicians with relevant research expertise and/or clinician-educators are encouraged to apply; Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
