  • TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Automotive maintenance and repair coordination and tracking: Maintains programs and procedures to track the maintenance, repair, and usage of fleet vehicles and equipment and to ensure compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and budgetary procedures.
  • Automotive Work Orders and Reports: Writes and reviews work orders, reports, and memos regarding auto shop activities and documents on the job accidents and injuries.
  • Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
  • Directs automotive maintenance and repairs: Oversees maintenance and repairs on rolling stock, equipment, and/or facilities.
  • Procures and/or manages inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
  • Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of light physical activity such as walking or standing. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

TARGET CLOSE DATE: 07/06/2026 PAY GRADE: Grade 22 TYPE: Full time JOB SUMMARY: Jefferson County's Fleet Management Department is seeking well-qualified, motivated Automotive/Heavy Equipment Shop Supervisors to direct repairs, service, and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles, trucks, and heavy equipment in a large shop. Work also involves planning, assigning, and evaluating the work activities of Automotive Technicians, Assistant Automotive Technicians, Equipment Service Workers, or other Skilled Laborers personnel engaged in the repair of diesel and gasoline powered automobiles, heavy duty trucks, heavy construction equipment or other specialized motorized equipment. Work includes establishing uniform practices relating to the repair and maintenance and assisting in determining the serviceability and adequacy of the abovementioned equipment. The employee receives overall objectives and resources available and develops deadlines, projects, and work to be done in consultation with the manager or superintendent. The employee plans and carries out the assignment, resolves most of the conflicts that arise, and coordinates the work with others, as necessary; also interprets policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives. The employee keeps the supervisor informed on progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications. The employee maintains records and information pertaining to supplies and other inventory such as oil, tires, etc. Work is performed with latitude for independent judgment and action and is reviewed by a superior through conference and by inspection of repaired equipment.
