Job Summary: The Conventional Machinist I has some knowledge on setting up and operating a variety of conventional machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments including fabricating, modifying, or repairing mechanical instruments. The Conventional Machinist I may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Essential Functions: - Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as conventional lathes, milling machines, shapers, grinders, or drill press - Communicate with engineering, supervisory, or manufacturing personnel to exchange technical information - Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measurement instruments - Set up, adjust, and operate all of the conventional machine tools, drill presses and many specialized or advanced variation tools to perform precision machining operations - Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials into machines - Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process - Study sample parts, blueprints, and drawings to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products up to geometric dimensional tolerances - Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work - Listen to operating machines or equipment in order to detect machine malfunctions and compensate for problems - Any other task assigned by supervisor or management
