Senior Staff, Back-end Engineer (Gateway Services)

Responsibilities

• Design and implementation of traffic control and Service Mesh architecture in large-scale microservices environments
• Development and enhancement of core infrastructure components including service discovery, load balancing, and resiliency mechanisms
• Design of centralized policy and configuration management systems using a management plane
• Strengthening inter-service communication security through mTLS encryption and identity-based authentication and authorization
• Design and development of backend APIs using Java (Spring Boot) and infrastructure components using Go
• Simplification of complex infrastructure challenges into scalable and executable solutions
• Establishment of high-quality, highly available, and scalable platform architecture standards
• Root cause analysis and resolution of critical system issues, along with prevention mechanisms
• Collaboration with platform teams and technical leaders to improve service scalability and drive innovation
• Continuous improvement of engineering and operational excellence

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field
• 8+ years of software development experience with at least 2+ years in a Technical Lead role
• Experience in designing and implementing traffic management solutions for large-scale systems
• Hands-on experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems within the past 3 years
• Strong programming skills in one or more languages such as Java, Go, or Python
• Proven track record of delivering mission-critical systems
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to drive complex technical initiatives independently
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate and influence across teams
• Hands-on experience with Service Mesh technologies such as Istio
• Deep understanding of network components including VPCs, subnets, routing, and gateways
• Strong knowledge of modern web application architecture and API design patterns at scale
• Experience building high-performance and large-scale distributed systems
• Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and lead large-scale project delivery
• Experience providing technical leadership within platform or infrastructure engineering teams

Role Overview The Gateway Services team is responsible for building Coupang's infrastructure layer based on a distributed microservices architecture, enabling reliable and efficient inter-service communication across the company. This infrastructure includes key capabilities such as service discovery, load balancing, traffic resiliency, traffic management, failure recovery, and observability. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing and evolving the platform architecture that powers Coupang's services at scale. You will lead the development of Service Mesh and traffic control systems while providing technical leadership to drive high-quality and reliable delivery. You will also embody Coupang's leadership principles by transforming complex challenges into simple, executable solutions and continuously improving the scalability and reliability of the platform.
