About the role

The Lead Medical Support Assistance (MSA) at grade GS-7 will be assigned to Women's Health Program and work under the general Supervision of the Women Veteran Program Manager. If using post-high school education to substitute for experience at the GS-04 or GS-05, you must submit a copy of your unofficial or official college transcript with your application. Grade Determinations: Lead Medical Support Assistant, GS-0679-07 Experience: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to meeting the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and a wide range of clinical flow processes relating to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community. Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain the desired effect and coordinating with a variety of interdisciplinary care team staff. Ability to utilize numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting. Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities in order to meet deadlines. Ability to provide staff development and training. Ability to manage staffing requirements, manage workflow priorities, and adjust the flow of work to meet team and patient needs. This includes the ability to follow-up on pending issues and demonstrate an understanding of the impact of incomplete work across multiple clinics. Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties: The Lead (MSA) is responsible for providing guidance and leadership to the other MSA as well as ensuring assistance to Veterans providing a smooth process for the management of his/her outpatient appointments as well as support work in connection with the care and treatment given to the Veterans by performing a variety of support duties that facilitate the work. The Lead MSA will spend 75% of their time on the "floor" handling administrative tasks directly related to the Service Line and 25% of the their time will be spent monitoring, coaching and other administrative duties. This position includes, but is not limited to, work that requires a practical knowledge of computerized data entry and information processing systems, ensures the database integrity by monitoring for accuracy and completeness, creating and maintaining staff work schedules and coverage, orienting and providing on-the-job training for new and current staff, ensuring all training requirements are met, knowledge of the medical facility's organization and services, rules and regulations governing eligibility and treatment, practical knowledge of the standard procedures, medical records, medical terminology, security of sensitive electronic files, process improvement, gives guidance and initiates action as appropriate. Supervisory Controls: The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Women Veteran Program Manager with close oversight by the Radiology Administrator and Community Care. Independently performs recurring duties within program guidelines/policies. Completed work is reviewed periodically to ensure accuracy, timeliness, soundness, and conformity to policy requirements.
