About the role

Under the direction of the Medical Physicist, the Dosimetrist provides dosimetry, treatment planning, and quality management service to the Department of Medical Physics and the Department of Radiation Oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in patient simulation
  • Supervises and assists technologists in the simulation of treatment portals and tumor localization as specified by the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Schedules simulations and treatment times in conjunction with the simulator technologist, as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Prepares contours of patients, including all necessary patient measurements and landmarks as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Interfaces with CT to obtain magnetic tapes with patient contours as needed.
  • Transfers all simulator setup information to set up on the treatment unit and assists staff technologists with the initial setup when necessary, as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Supervises film taking of brachytherapy patients as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Produces patient treatment plans and dose calculations
  • Performs manual dose calculations before patients' third treatment, as observed in weekly chart rounds.
  • Produces computerized treatment plans which are reviewed by the Radiation Oncologists before patients' first treatment, as observed by the Director of Medical Physics and Physicians.
  • Prepares the patient treatment chart as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Calculates daily treatment parameters through approved prescriptions as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Prepares plans for special procedures, as requested by Radiation Oncologists and Physicists.
  • Determines dosage to brachytherapy patients from computerized
  • brachytherapy plans as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Participates in patient treatment quality assurance
  • Double-checks calculations generated by other staff (technologists, physicists), as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Checks patient setup with complicated treatment plans as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Works with Radiation Oncologists and Physicists in the application of new treatment techniques, as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Checks patient charts on a weekly basis for errors in dose calculation and dose summation as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Checks patient charts for completeness at the end of the patient's treatment course as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Does supervision and planning for special procedures (tissue
  • compensation, field gaps, etc.), as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Participates in equipment quality assurance
  • Assists Medical Physicists in quality assurance of radiation productivity equipment.
  • Performs quality assurance on the treatment planning computer as observed by the Director of Medical Physics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. degree in Medical Dosimetry or meets eligibility for Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
  • Minimum of one year of progressively more responsible work or intern experience in medical radiation dosimetry in a clinical environment.
  • Strong analytical, computer, and communication skills.
  • Required Licensure/Certification Skills:
  • Must obtain Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board (MDCB) Certification within two years after graduation date from an accredited dosimetry training school.
