Job Summary Housed in the Faculty of Education, the Learning Design and Digital Innovation (LDDI) unit offers educational services to advance scholarly and innovative approaches to teaching, learning, curriculum and learning technology practices. Those include four main areas: learning design (consultations and support with a design of all online, blended and in-classroom instruction), learning technologies (support of UBC Learning Management System (Canvas) and other technologies and tools that are used for teaching and learning), professional development (various types of individual and group sessions to build capacity) and innovation (Special funded projects, Summer Institutes short programs, non-credit offerings, etc.). As a member of the LDDI team, the Educational and Media Technologist incumbent provides support and assistance in relation to flexible, online and asynchronous learning, ensuring that technologies appropriately, effectively, consistently and sustainably support the educational objectives in various programs. The incumbent assists with the development of educational resources, multimedia assets, and the exploration and demonstration of the emerging digital technologies including Generative AI. Organizational Status Educational and Media Technologist reports to the Manager, Learning Design, LDDI, and works closely with other LDDI members as a team that designs, develops, revises and supports the Faculty of Education hybrid and online programs and courses. The position interacts with other educational stakeholders including faculty, program leaders, researchers, support staff and students and may be connected with other related communities at UBC. Work Performed - Acquires and maintains a working knowledge of the technical architecture of eLearning applications; - Researches current technical information relating to learning technology; - Responds to and assists with learning technology questions and requests sent to LDDI; - Monitors the delivery of online courses and programs, identifies technical problems with the LMS and other educational technologies (i.e. blogs, wikis, iPeer, Turnitin, Qualtrics, Piazza, Kaltura, Zoom and other tools as appropriate), resolves and/or escalates them as needed; - Participates in the analysis of needs of appropriate tools and technologies; - Participates in brainstorming sessions, contributes creative ideas, and offers solutions to push the boundaries of digital innovation in teaching. - Explores and assesses the use of generative AI and other emerging technologies in educational and administrative contexts, preparing reports and recommendations for potential applications. - Provides recommendation to faculty members, instructors and instructional support personnel on the selection of technologies and digital tools to meet pedagogical goals; - Produces written documentation and instructions on use of various tools and equipment; - Develops learning materials to train faculty on various learning technologies, and conducts workshops; - Assists with recording, production and creation of high-quality multimedia assets, including video, audio, captioning, and graphic design, to support innovative teaching practices and digital learning resources. - Increases the effectiveness of the use of multimedia in programs and courses; - Supports the optimization of website functionality and design in WordPress, ensuring a user-friendly and engaging online presence. - Performs other related duties as required.
