Facilities Operations Specialist

About the role

This is the position of Operations Manager, within the Radio & Geoastronomy (R&G) Division, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO), at the Submillimeter Array (SMA) facilities in Hawaii. The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is an array of eight 6-meter diameter radio telescopes operating throughout the 1.3 mm and 0.86 mm atmospheric windows (190-380 GHz) located in Hawaii. Specialized Experience: One year of directly related experience (Federal or other) equivalent to GS-12 in the federal service. Specialized experience would include activities such as such as having had an essential role in a facilities' management team for a multi-use facility, developing and implementing a facility safety plan, or obtaining certification and serving as a Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) for an infrastructure maintenance or construction project. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience.
