ABOUT THIS JOB Position Specific Summary The Heavy Truck Mechanic position at the City of Tucson's General Services Department rebuilds and installs components and makes service calls, performs preventive maintenance to chassis, and performs body components repairs to heavy trucks and equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of a Fleet Services Supervisor. This position does not supervise. Duties and Responsibilities Repairs equipment and makes service calls by diagnosing, troubleshooting, and replacing defective parts and components. Ensures safety by using proper equipment relevant to the repair and following required protocols. Installs new parts and components by welding and fabricating parts as needed. Performs preventative maintenance by replacing fluids and filters in equipment, measuring, adjusting, and recording test results, cleaning, and replacing components in equipment, checking and adjusting components, and ensuring equipment is in proper operating condition prior to releasing to operator. Tracks vehicle repairs through enterprise asset management system and/or department reporting protocols for scheduling, estimates, billing, and documentation purposes. Rebuilds and installs diesel, gasoline, and natural gas engines by disassembling, inspecting, measuring and evaluating internal and external engine parts. Verifies parts clearance and tolerance and makes adjustments as necessary. Interprets and applies information from technical manuals, web sites, schematics, wiring diagrams, system flows to diagnose and resolve issues. Investigates malfunctions and breakdowns by running diagnostics, checking for leaks and tears, and using appropriate equipment to diagnose problems. Contains and safely disposes of hazardous wastes. Repaints and labels equipment as needed. Maintains shop by cleaning and degreasing shop areas. Orders parts as needed. Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. Working Conditions Work schedule may include early morning, late evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and on-call. Often works under the following conditions: exposure to extreme physical, ergonomic, or hazardous environment, which includes but is not limited to dirt, grime, chemical, loud noise and unfavorable odors.
