About the role
We are seeking a Radiation Control Technician to join our team supporting the Los Alamos National Laboratory ! This position is full-time and will be based out of Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
- Provide radiological support in workplace surveillance, monitoring, and analysis/interpretation of radiological data.
- Deliver operational health physics support across assigned facilities, functions, or areas.
- Support and oversee high-hazard radiological work activities.
- Ensure compliance with radiation protection standards, procedures, and 10 CFR 835 requirements.
- Review radiological work plans to ensure proper controls, postings, and compliance with laboratory requirements.
- Implement radiation protection procedures across a wide range of activities.
- Interface with emergency personnel and respond to radiological or radioactive material incidents.
- Support re-entry planning and direct monitoring activities during contamination events.
- Provide mentorship and on-the-job training to junior technicians in radiation monitoring, contamination control, exposure control, emergency response, and radiation work permits.
- Collaborate with Health Physicists to ensure appropriate safety measures and controls.
- Assume field leadership responsibilities and direct other RCTs as needed.
- Work independently with minimal supervision; apply technical judgment to solve complex radiological challenges.
- Ensure work aligns with organizational objectives and established procedures.
Requirements
- Education & Years of Experience - High School Diploma and 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Citizenship - To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
- Clearance - To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
- Ability to meet requirements outlined in DOE Order 426.2 (Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities).
- Strong understanding of radiological control principles, theories, and practices.
- Experience supporting high-hazard radiological environments.
- Knowledge of radiation protection regulations, including 10 CFR 835.
- Ability to follow established procedures, specifications, and safety requirements.
- Capable of working independently with limited supervision.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, and 24/7 coverage as needed.
- Ability to work in outdoor and physically demanding environments.
- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and carry up to 35 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, crawl, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to use ladders and stairways.
- Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities.
- Ability to wear PPE, including respiratory protection.
- Free from medical conditions that would prevent safe work in controlled radiological areas.
