About the role
A well-established engineering and logistics group is seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to lead a high-activity workshop covering heavy vehicles, construction equipment and machinery . You will oversee end-to-end workshop operations, ensuring efficient maintenance, high-quality repairs, strong safety standards, and optimal fleet/equipment uptime. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on expertise in heavy equipment maintenance, fleet operations, and workshop leadership .
Responsibilities
- Workshop Operations & Leadership
- Lead and supervise a team of technicians, mechanics, and supervisors in daily workshop operations.
- Plan, coordinate, and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance for heavy vehicles, construction equipment, and machinery.
- Ensure efficient allocation of manpower, workshop bays, tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Drive workshop performance, productivity, and operational efficiency to meet service KPIs.
- Maintenance & Technical Quality
- Oversee repair, servicing, and troubleshooting for trucks, lorries, heavy equipment (e.g. excavators, bulldozers, cranes), and industrial machinery .
- Ensure accurate documentation of job sheets, service reports, and parts usage.
- Maintain high standards in repair quality, equipment reliability, and turnaround time.
- Implement best practices in maintenance planning to minimize downtime.
- Inventory & Parts Management
- Manage spare parts inventory for both vehicles and heavy equipment, ensuring optimal stock levels and cost control.
- Oversee procurement and proper usage of workshop tools, machinery, and diagnostic systems.
- Monitor vendor performance for parts supply and servicing support.
- Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict adherence to workplace safety standards, SOPs, and regulatory requirements (including heavy equipment operations).
- Ensure compliance with WHS, LTA/land transport, and relevant equipment safety regulations .
- Lead safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations within the workshop.
- Team Development
- Train, coach, and mentor technicians to improve technical, diagnostic, and equipment-handling capabilities.
- Build a strong, safety-first culture within the workshop environment.
- Support succession planning and technical skill development across the team.
Requirements
- Diploma / Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience managing a workshop covering heavy vehicles, construction equipment & machinery.
- Strong leadership experience in managing workshop teams and multi-asset maintenance operations.
- Solid technical knowledge in diesel engines, hydraulics, heavy equipment systems, and machinery maintenance .
- Experience in fleet and equipment maintenance planning (PM/CM systems) is an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving, planning, and communication skills.
