Position will serve as a County Maintenance Engineer for Northern Wake County based in Franklin County in Bunn, NC. The primary purpose of this organizational unit is to build, maintain, improve and provide a safe highway transportation system in a highway division within the approved budget and consistent with all laws and regulations governing the State Highway System. The primary purpose of this position is to manage, plan, organize, coordinate, supervise and direct various aspects of Highway Maintenance operations including force accounts and purchase order contract construction. This position manages these activities within budgetary constraints and organizes/directs the safety program for the assigned counties. Duties include responding to inquiries from the public, DOT Management, Media, etc., regarding DOT policies and procedures, division projects, plans and proposed work. This position has Emergency Call Back status and must be able to respond to Highway emergencies and work during inclement weather events. Level II erosion control certification is required within one year of hire. The selected applicant for this position must possess the ability to use engineering judgment and knowledge to solve difficult highway projects and maintenance problems; to accomplish force accounts construction projects; to supervise and monitor maintenance programs to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Must have the ability to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget and data. Must supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees and must be able to effectively communicate and maintain a working relationship with general public, local governments, fellow employees, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and make field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold. Must be able to apply professional engineering skills and knowledge to difficult highway projects and problems. Safety toe shoes are required for this position. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC21 $70,627 - $137,724 Management prefers applicants with the following: Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews Experience in the use of engineering skills and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conduct investigations and resolve various issues Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience."
