About the role
The City of Ventura is seeking a customer service-oriented and detail-focused Human Resources Technician to join our Human Resources Department. Under general supervision, this position provides confidential administrative, technical, and paraprofessional support across a variety of Human Resources programs and services. Tracks course completion and ensures compliance with mandatory training requirements. Assists with and supports activities related to various Human Resources programs, including recruitment, benefits, employee relations, employee records, training, and other related functions. Compiles, analyzes, and prepares data, metrics, and reports to support operational needs, program evaluation, and decision-making. Provides customer service and administrative support to employees, departments, applicants, and the public by responding to inquiries, assisting with requests, and providing front-office coverage as needed. Maintains and updates records, databases, spreadsheets, and reports; performs data entry, tracking, analysis, and auditing to support Human Resources programs and ensure data accuracy and compliance. Performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications - Required Human Resources Technician I: Requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to completion of high school and two years of experience in a human resources, workers' compensation or risk management function or 18 months experience in a human resources, workers' compensation or risk management function plus college coursework in a related field. Human Resources Technician II: Requires a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to two years of college coursework in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Occupational Safety, or a related field, and 18 months of para-professional human resources, workers' compensation or risk management related experience in a position comparable to a Human Resources Technician I. License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required. About the Department The Human Resources Department serves as an internal service department dedicated to supporting the City's workforce and helping departments achieve their operational goals. The department provides comprehensive Human Resources services to over 700 employees across 11 City departments, ensuring that programs, policies, and practices support the effective delivery of public services. The department is organized into five primary functional areas: Recruitment and Selection, Employee and Labor Relations, Benefits Administration, Risk Management, and Training and Development. Human Resources administers a wide range of programs and services, including talent acquisition, classification and compensation, employee and labor relations, benefits administration, workers' compensation, safety and wellness initiatives, organizational development, and liability and loss-control programs.
