The goal of this training program is to acquaint the student Johnathan Zhou with basic concepts on the biology of apoptosis in cancer. The student will learn basic molecular biology lab techniques and will analyze the molecular interactions of BCL-2 family pro- and anti-apoptotic protein through experiments involving viability assays and BH3 profiling. In addition, the student will be exposed to analyses and interpretation of all data being generated in the Davids Lab. The student will present his research during a weekly group meeting, participate in meeting reviews (during which we discuss the work of other groups, and its implication for our research), and participate in our regular journal club meetings. Lastly, he will become familiar with the research of other groups from the Department of Medical Oncology, by participating in our weekly New Patient Conference. Understanding basic concepts of apoptosis . This will be evaluated by the direct supervisor Dr. Ung and by the PI Dr. Davids during our regular research meetings, in which Johnathan will participate in actively. Developing the ability to present new data . The student will present his ongoing work during a group meeting of the Davids Lab. All members of the lab will ask questions and make suggestions. Learning the following techniques : pipetting, sterile technique, tissue culture work, cell line maintenance including passaging cells, viability experiments, BH3 profiling, flow cytometry including data analysis and interpretation. He will be performing these experiments with daily help and input from Dr. Ung.
