This position will serve as an Engineering Technician III within the Onslow County Maintenance Yard. This Technician III level position will support higher level Technicians or Engineers in preparing plans, documents, estimates and contracts. This position will perform field inspections for maintenance contracts, organize and maintain as built and road files. The selected candidate will need to have or obtain asphalt, concrete, and conventional density certifications. The selected candidate will need to be familiar with HMIP and RMIP planning. This position will meet with utility representatives, contractors, property owners, and others to discuss adherence to policies and procedures, answer questions, and address complaints from the general public by telephone, written correspondence, or in person. This position will assist the County Maintenance Engineer as needed during emergencies and inclement weather. This position will also assist the County Engineer with other tasks as assigned. Duties involve operating a state-owned vehicle in the daily performance of duties. Qualified applicants should possess general knowledge of construction inspection and surveying principles and practices, demonstrate proficiency in basic mathematics, and be capable of performing accurate field calculations. The position requires attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to work safely in outdoor environments (extreme weather) with exposure to construction site hazards such as traffic, heights, and uneven terrain. Moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing, is required. This position provides the opportunity to contribute to the successful delivery of transportation projects that enhance public safety and infrastructure quality. The selected applicant will be expected to safely and legally operate a motor vehicle. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to be assigned to any project within the County. Night and weekend assignments may be required before, during, or after storm events for emergency response. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Safety toe shoes required. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC11 $45,431 - $79,504 Management prefers applicants with the following: Working knowledge of NCDOT Standard Specifications, Standard Drawings, and Project Special Provisions. Experience in conducting independent, complex inspections for roadway and resurfacing projects to ensure compliance with contract documents, plans, with limited supervision. Experience in performing inspections, sampling and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications. Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports including computer/iPad data entry Skill in the use of basic office equipment and computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, ArcView, SAP, MMS, SPPP) and Basic mathematics.
