Position Summary This position is a full-time paid internship with the Research & Development department where the candidate will gain hands on experience and training under supervision of scientists and research associates on basic day-to-day Biosafety level 1 (BSL-1) laboratory techniques, i.e. buffer prep, cell culture, plasmid isolation, PCR, and protein purification. The candidate will be able to interact with R&D directors, scientists and staff. This is an opportunity for an enrolled undergraduate or graduate student to be exposed to the day-to-day activities of a research lab, such as but not limited to: safety considerations, waste management, as well as experimental design and data presentation. Essential Functions Adhere to company work hours, policies and procedures. Adhere to company policies governing confidentiality and the handling of confidential information. Observe and train in lab safety concepts. Attend and participate in department lab meetings to learn about scientific principles, techniques and potential project opportunities that could present themselves, including but not guaranteed are: Basic lab - pipetting, buffer prep Molecular biology - plasmid isolation, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis Cell biology - sterile technique, cell culture Biochemistry - antibody purification Assist scientists and research associates with research experiments by performing basic tasks, such as buffer and media prep. Prepare for and utilize opportunities of learning such as presentations Submit on time and with consistency all work assignments to the internship supervisor. Provide internship supervisor with periodic progress reports as needed. Education & Experience Must be at least 18 years of age and currently pursuing or completed an undergraduate degree in Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or similar Completion of a college level biology or chemistry class Completion of at least one molecular biology or genetics course (or equivalent lab experience) Prior research experience in an academic or industry laboratory setting preferred Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Able to relate and apply knowledge acquired in the academic setting to the company setting Strong verbal and written communication skills Self-motivated and hard-working Strong attention to detail Able to take direction and multi-task Able to work in a team Proficient in PowerPoint, Word and Excel Conducts self professionally with a courteous, enthusiastic and critical approach to assignments. Working Environment / Physical Environment Working environment is onsite in a research lab space equipped with biosafety cabinets for cell culture and equipment sufficient to complete the tasks described above. The lab environment will include potential exposure to BSL-2 due to Adenovirus work that occasionally occurs onsite. This position will be learning BSL-1 techniques. Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer. Lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds. This position is eligible for a discretionary bonus and equity award. The hourly base pay range for this position is below.
