This individual will guide the development and execution of a department-wide vision that advances high-impact basic and translational science, strengthens national competitiveness, and accelerates the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical innovation. In close partnership with the Vice Chair of Research for Clinical and Implementation Sciences, this role will ensure alignment across the full research continuum-from bench to bedside to population health-while identifying emerging scientific opportunities and driving strategic investments in faculty, infrastructure, and technology. The Vice Chair will play a central role in expanding externally funded research, enhancing laboratory and core infrastructure, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration in partnership with leadership across the School of Medicine. The ideal candidate will be an Associate or full Professor and have a track record of external funding, national recognition, and a credible publication record. They will recruit, mentor, and retain top-tier investigators while shaping faculty development pathways and overseeing an equitable research compensation strategy that incentivizes productivity and innovation. The ideal candidate has a track record of building highly successful teams. They will work with our central team to build & support our investigators. This leader will also promote inclusive excellence, support team science, and represent the Department in institutional governance, helping to elevate the academic and research profile of the organization. Department of Medicine Vice Chars are members of the faculty at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (BUCASM). Department Overview: Located in Boston's historic South End, the Department of Medicine at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center is renowned for its impact of teaching and research programs and state-of-the-art clinical care for patients. The department is dedicated to an urban, underserved patient population, supporting the longstanding social mission of BMC. Faculty and trainees of the Department care for patients throughout the City of Boston, from Boston Medical Center to the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System to a number of community health centers. Boston Medical Center is the primary clinical and research center for the Department of Medicine and primary teaching affiliate of the Boston University School of Medicine. Training programs at the Department of Medicine include a categorical residency with 45 residents per year, a Preliminary Year Program, a Primary Care Training Program, Research Track, seven Specialized Pathways, and fifteen clinical fellowships. At BMC, faculty and trainees provide state of the art care for the most diverse patient population in the city. The Department of Medicine is comprised of fourteen sections: - Biomedical Genetics - Cardiovascular Medicine - Computational Biomedicine - Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition - Gastroenterology - General Internal Medicine - Geriatrics - Hematology and Medical Oncology - Infectious Disease - Nephrology - Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology - Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep, and Critical Care Medicine - Rheumatology - Vascular Biology In addition to these sections, the department is home to world-renowned research Centers and a variety of specialized programs in which investigators collaborate toward innovation.
