Step into a key engineering role with Austin Energy's Distribution Asset Management Team, where you'll apply your expertise in electric utility design, electric distribution concepts, and project management to keep our power grid safe and reliable. This position will be in close collaboration with colleagues across Engineering, Operations and Project Management, giving you the opportunity to prepare electric distribution system related cost estimates, engineering/feasibility reports, perform complex engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems. In this position, you'll review pole inspection data to develop system improvements, manage distribution related projects and serve as a go-to resource for solving technical challenges. This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy blending technical design with hands-on problem solving-and who want their work to make a direct impact on powering the City of Austin. Job Description: Power System Graduate Engineer Purpose: Under limited supervision designs, and assists in the design of electric utility system facilities, including: generation, electric substations, overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines, network systems, protection systems, supervisory control systems (SCADA), Energy Management, market operation and settlement systems, street lighting, and other electric system facilities. This position exists only in the Power Production and Electrical Services Delivery department of Austin Energy. Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, test procedures. Performs and/or assists in power system studies such as protective coordination, fault studies, load flows, service reliability, power quality, voltage stability, etc. Prepares or assists in engineering design and develops drawings and other documents for generation, transmission, distribution, substations and SCADA/EMS. Prepares or assists in the preparation and maintenance of drawings, circuit maps, diagrams, charts, data bases and plans. Provide assistance to all classes of customers, developers, and to other City Departments on technical matters relevant to electric utility services. Provide technical and financial inputs for projects in electric utility budget process. Prepares and/or assists in the preparation of safety procedures for electric facilities. Work closely with field personnel to support project energization. Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: None. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Knowledge of engineering design principles applicable to electric utility operations such as, generation, transmission, distribution and other related fields. Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry. Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of assigned discipline. Knowledge of leadership roles and responsibilities. Knowledge of applicability of established engineering principles and methods. Knowledge of various computer software programs applicable to position. Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates. Skill in oral and written technical and/or general communication. Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems. Ability to Read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings. Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written formats to coworkers and public.
