The Springer Journals, Medicine & Life Sciences group is seeking a new Executive Publisher in the New York office to manage and develop the North American society journal portfolio.
The Executive Publisher drives the strategic growth, performance, and editorial development of a journal portfolio, while managing and developing a high‑performing team and fostering strong relationships with editors, partners, and research communities.
Responsibilities
Lead & Develop a High‑Performing Team
Build a positive, engaged, and developmental team environment.
Set, communicate, and review clear objectives; support performance and resolve issues.
Provide coaching and encourage continuous improvement and autonomy.
Monitor well-being and foster alignment with the employer brand.
Drive Editorial & Portfolio Strategy
Deliver journals with strong author experience and strong engagement from editors/EBMs.
Develop and implement portfolio strategies aligned with wider priorities and market trends.
Set and monitor KPIs and performance targets using a data‑driven approach.
Develop tactics to acquire and retain high‑quality content.
Engage with Editors & Research Communities
Build strong relationships with EiCs, EBMs, peer reviewers, and research communities.
Monitor and improve editorial service levels, especially manuscript handling times.
Identify community needs and industry trends (e.g., Open Science, OA, increasing output) and translate them into portfolio initiatives.
Manage Society & Institutional Partnerships
Ensure excellent service delivery for publishing partners; address any service issues proactively.
Maintain and grow relationships with key societies
Explore and acquire new opportunities with leading societies, associations and journal owners in your communities
Implement Strategy, Policies & Workflows
Ensure team understanding and execution of strategic priorities.
Apply market intelligence and data to guide portfolio decisions.
Lead adoption of new workflows, systems, and policies in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
Contribute to the Wider Journals Division
Participate in cross‑departmental projects and working groups.
Collaborate with Publishing Directors and peers to support wider organizational goals.
Act as subject‑area champion to enhance visibility and influence.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
2+ years of leadership experience managing and developing high‑performing teams, including setting direction, coaching performance, and leading through change in a complex or matrixed environment.
Experience building and maintaining effective relationships with external partners, particularly academic societies, institutions, or journal owners.
5+ years of experience contributing to or leading the strategic management of a journal or publishing portfolio, with responsibility for performance, growth, and long‑term planning.
Experience managing journals at a Senior Publisher level preferred.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the credibility to engage and influence senior internal leaders, Editors‑in‑Chief, Editorial Boards, societies, and research communities.
Deep understanding of the scholarly publishing ecosystem and research lifecycle, ideally within life sciences, including editorial workflows, peer review, and research integrity.
Strong commercial and strategic mindset, with the ability to balance editorial excellence, author experience, partner expectations, and sustainable business outcomes.
Data‑driven approach, with confidence using KPIs and performance insights to inform decisions and improve portfolio outcomes.
Familiarity with key industry trends such as Open Access, Open Research, and increasing publishing scale and complexity.
Demonstrated ability to implement strategy, policies, and new workflows, working collaboratively with cross‑functional teams.
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in a relevant field is advantageous, preferably in medicine or life sciences
